Trump doesn't plan to return.

"I am not going on Twitter, I am going to stay on TRUTH," Trump told Fox News. "I hope Elon buys Twitter because he’ll make improvements to it and he is a good man, but I am going to be staying on TRUTH."

Trump told Fox News he will begin "TRUTHing" over the next week.

Yeah, I don't think Truth social or whatever it's called is going to make big waves.  If Elon opens Twitter back up to him, he'll return.  In other good news, after killing off my old alias on here due to a mod inexplicably using my personal email to contact me, then making a new one only to take a long break because of more heavy censorship unrelated to the TOS I've decided to get back on. Arsalan accepted Elon's tender offer of a Swiss Chalet quarter chicken dinner for a controlling share of Waygook and is pushing for no more cancel culture from the Islander.  Wonderful news for all of us who support the right to free speech on here.

The ongoing meltdown over this across twiter and reddit etc is amusing. The terminally online are acting like the sky is falling.

they'll get over it. most of those sorts have an addiction, they wouldn't tank the platform regardless of who bought it

(T)houghts?

I think it is sad that people use Twitter in the first place. Nothing but a platform that accelerates the decline of whatever culture we thought we had.

Nothing will change it will be the same old business with the exception of maybe a edit button or dislike button.

Elon owns Tesla and Tesla has no problems getting business from both sides of the coin

Two completely different types of businesses.

He intends to take the company private to move it away from the current ad model.

Of course he has to make money from it, there was already a paid twitter subscription available/in the works.

The amount he paid for twitter is insane and he could’ve built a new website and new model  if he really wanted too.

Yeah, like the billionaires who owned Twitter before.

the problem with that would be getting people to use it, and it takes these social media sites a while to run themselves to the ground. facebook is declining and tumblr tanked itself, i doubt twitter would be going anywhere for a while though

Money, you say?

"Users May Exit Now That Musk is Involved
Conducted on April 26, gambling data site Time2Play surveyed 1,953 American Twitter users about what actions they may take now that Musk is at the helm.

It found that close to a quarter of Twitter's users, 24.4%, said they would leave the platform entirely if Musk allows former president Donald Trump to be reinstated as a user.

That many users leaving would cost Twitter $1.24 billion, based on its fourth-quarter results for 2021."

"The poll found that 16.3% said they would leave the platform entirely if the deal is finalized.

That slice of people leaving could ultimately cost Twitter $828 million, based on 2021 revenue reports found in the company's 2021 fourth-quarter release.

TikTok, TikTok, TikTok...

tiktok and twitter appeal to fundamentally different audiences (although there is some overlap) and fulfill different purposes. twitter is the town hall for people who want to type out a quick opinion and sent it into the ether, tiktok is just short videos.

i do get you were probably just going for a pun there rather than direct comparison, but my overall point is there isnt any social network that does what twitter does right now (the right have made their attemps, like gab and whatnot, but theres a reason you probably havent heard of them lol). in the case of facebook it tanked simply because a lot of younger people weren't interested in what it had to offer. tumblr went down because yahoo! tried to solve the websites massive child p*rn problem by banning all p*rn (more complicated than that ofc, i think some sort of id system was involved, but thats the gist of i). musk would have to mess with the core aspects of twitter to really tank it, and it sounds like he wont be doing much beyond making the algorithm open-source and messing with advertising a bit.

https://www.vox.com/2016/3/15/11233676/move-canada-poll

I suspect that the number of people moving off will not be so massive. Twitter is addictive, like seriously. People get dopamine rushes and stuff from it.  Sure it's easier to stop than to move your house but we're talking serious levels of chemical habit for many.

Finally, if any serious attempt from the left does happen, it is a terrible look.

1. "I'm against twitter because Musk wants free speech."
2. "If there is free speech, I can't win in a debate, so I'm going to run away."
3. "The best answer is to run, not fight."
4. "My side should control the platform. If it doesn't, that's wrong."

Just an awful look.

anyways i would take any poll claiming a certain % of twitter users will leave with a mountain of salt. the same people that obsessively tweet and are most likely to bother responding to a poll on the topic also have an unhealthy addiction, i doubt any of them would last more than a week
