Is 2022 the worst year in new music?
« on: May 05, 2022, 10:50:21 pm »
I have spent this day listening to the recent Billboard Top 100 and the two I liked I heard last summer?!

(E.g. Heat Waves I profiled last summer, has a quarter billion vid views now.
https://youtu.be/mRD0-GxqHVo)

 ... 95 of 100 flush?

Maybe tastes have changed?
Or the lack of $$ doesn't incentivize artists.

*shrug*

It's all pop.  Rock mostly gone from top 40 for nearly a decade.  Not sure why?  Folks, even kids will listen to the classic bands like Journey and others.  Anyways, I tolerate modern music, get use to it.  I do like some stuff from Cold Play and maybe a couple of other popish groups like imagine dragons.

What's that BMW ad in Korea?  Higher power?  Clocks was one of my favorite tunes by them.

Imagine dragons song?  Radioactive?

Modern semi pop music with some slight rock and other influences.

People need to let it go when it comes to rock and also accept the fact that they've gotten old and they might as well be their grand/great-grandparents whining that no one likes Artie Shaw and Glenn Miller anymore and upset kids are listening to long-haired British weirdos and negroes from Detroit.

It's less about rock and more that pop has gotten mundane and lacks any originality. It's auto-tuned and over-produced to hell. Oh what's that? Another trap beat and reggaeton?

Indeed.

And,

Media in general has become fragmented, making it harder to appeal to the masses, harder to get big widespread hit songs, harder to get paid due to fragmentation, AND due to technology: so much free music with the tap no longer overflowing from sales of vinyl, cassette, CD and radio.

Just look at the re-hashed musicians on the NFL's widely-televised Superbowl.

Let's not pretend wilted flowers are spring chickens.

(Plus the inundation of 'chill' sounds and drug lyrics in the legalization age; i ain't an iota against the change in law but roll eyes at the lyrics and slow sounds.)

Dee Martino probably thinks digging at pop is also a dig at K pop.  So, he gets triggered.  Never say anything negative about Korea.

But, as I said, there are some popish music I do like.

Wouldn't you categorize Cold Play as pop?  I don't mind some of their songs but they seem like pretty mainstream pop to me.  Since you mention Clocks (a good song) here is a song that I think rocks that came out a year later by another band.  Both songs are old now, but I think if you search you can still find good stuff.  The problem for me is that I no longer listen to radio whereas back in Canada the gym had it on and we usually put it on in the car and even work at low volume.  And with no record stores to while away the hours and no Much Music/MTV I'm just not exposed to new stuff anymore.  And the gyms here play the worst music they can find, but at high volume.  Nothing like hearing WAP at ten.

By the way "popish" would imply music composed or inspired by the POPE.  You wanted poppish.

Both lyrically and musically it's horrible.  I often wonder what the older people at the gym would think if they knew what was playing.  I'm not sure anyone there actually knows.  Even the ones that put it on.

We listened to good stuff back in my day! Sugar Ray? Smash Mouth?

There will always be popular, successful music that you don't like and that doesn't stand the test of time.

With the variety of streaming services available it's not difficult to find music you like. There is something for everyone.

yeah, the only new music i get is from music blogs, or occasionally if an album gets a lot of hype/discourse on social media i'll give it a listen, like the new kendrick. i have yet to listen to jack harlows latest one but apparently its bad so i might not bother

i dont mind much of what plays on the radio because its background noise to me anyways (unless its something horrifically annoying like that one tones & i song thats been on repeat for like the last couple years)

if youre looking for good music i wouldnt necessarily expect to find it on the billboard top 100, lol. the music that plays the most isn't necessarily the best music, usually just the most catchy/inoffensive. dumb shit has been playing on the top 100 for as long as radio has existed

Seriously.  If you like good music you'll pretty much avoid the Top 40 and Grammy winners.  Usually the Grammys don't recognize innovative music until long after they've been around or when someone in the band dies.  They're not on the cutting edge.  They love artists like Bruno Mars, John Legend and Adele.  Not saying they're sh*t, just very mainstream.

No, it's called being an old man and time has passed you by. Being upset over today's music is one step away from yelling at a cloud.

I did like a lot of 2000's rock which was often under rated when it comes to rating rock classics.  Linkin Park and Audioslave, I loved those guys back in the day.  Though odd enough both Chris and Chester ended up dead (or maybe suicided like Jeffrey Epstein if you believe conspiracy theorists).  Very talented musicians with powerful voices and they use to be in the top 40.  But over the past 10 years or so all booted from top 40.  I agree plenty of music in top 40 not that great.  Just manufactured stuff where the person didn't write their own music.  I can appreciate other types of music sometimes though.

There was a slow Ed Sheeran song I liked because it reminded me of old Celtic music mixed with a 1950's style slow rock song.  (I remember that old Pearl Jam 1950's style song "Where is my baby"?  I can't remember the name of it.)  But he is not a rock musician and I am mostly not into his stuff.  The odd country song I may not mind, though mostly I am not into it.  Also some old outlaw stuff that I can't listen to for long periods but can listen to.  (I even had a few old Christian Rock tapes given to me.  They were already several years old when I was given them.  Petra, DC Talk, etc.  Skillet is in that genre though I didn't know it when I first started listening to them over 10 years ago.)

I think the problem is a lot of them believed the B.S. that they'd never grow old and would always be open to new things.

And lets be real about things- One reason for rock's diminishing appeal is that for young people it is associated with oldness and whiteness and to them, that isn't appealing.

Now, that's certainly a problem. That attitude is really bad and musically close-minded. Rock was huge. In many ways it still is. And it offers massive amounts of fantastic music and is a window into history as well as a vehicle for change. However, rock fans don't exactly extend the olive branch with their "If it isn't rock, it's not the greatest. If it's not what I grew up listening to, it isn't the greatest. And not just that, YOUR music is actively bad." That's before you get to the optics of predominantly older white people bashing genres of music predominantly made by POC, often with insults that come across as racist or homophobic and then doing the facepalm of "But I like Jimi Hendrix" which is basically the musical equivalent of "My one black friend" or the equally ubiquitous "I don't like most rap but Eminem is okay." Gee, I wonder what made him easy to swallow for you...

Not to mention the basic bad attitude of "I'm upset other people like something and are having fun. That's bad. They should be liking the things I like.

Gee I'm shocked that young people want nothing to do with rock and by extension rock fans.

1. You're claiming to be a member of Gen Z?
2. Not listening to much Top-40 these days.
3. Even if I was, who cares? Why is that a bad thing? Why does that bother you? Why would that be a source of derision?

"Go and listen to this music you enjoy and your friends enjoy as well and you have a good time listening to together"

Great retort there...
