Change from E-2 to F-2-7 mid-contract?
« on: July 19, 2022, 10:07:22 am »
I've just had a bomb dropped on me this morning: My new contract will only be for 6-months instead of 12, as the city's mayor has changed and I'm technically at the whim of City Hall for my salary (kind of independently contracted through my school, who is funded by City Hall, not through the Office of Education), and the new mayor is still considering whether he'd allow me to extend for the other 6 months.
So I have a few questions:
1. Is this even a thing? Is it possible to extend the E-2 for just 6 months? (Asking honestly, because I don't know.)
2. I've been considering the switch to the F-visa for a while. Is it possible to switch my visa while I'm in this new 6-month contract? (Trying to switch before January so my age bracket doesn't change and give me less points.)
And 3. Has anyone else gone through the visa change? Any tips or suggestions to make the process easier?
Thanks in advance,
Annie.

Yes, I think it is possible to *extend an existing* contract by 6 months. A few years back my school was considering doing this to accommodate me (although it ended up not being necessary so I can't  say with 100% certainty that it is in fact possible).

Changing visa types midway through a contract will probably cause a lot of paperwork for your school lol. I wouldn't make too much of a fuss about it until its a fait accompli.
Also, these processes are always more effort and time than expected, so get the ball rolling asap!
Best of luck!

Update: My co-teacher called Immigration and it is possible to extend my contract only 6 months. I'm still not happy with the circumstances, but it's possible.

I can't speak to the 6 month extension but I changed from an E2 to an F2-7 at my public elementary school without any major problems. The only problem I've had with the paperwork is getting the admin department to sign me up for the 고용보험 (employment insurance). This is mandatory for F2s and F5s but my admin department dragged their feet for ages for reasons unknown. If you have any problems with it you can find info about it here: https://www.4insure.or.kr/ins4/ptl/eng/forn/FornSoclInsuLayout.do under "Migrants eligibility for EI coverage".

I recommend you join the F2-7 visa group on Facebook if you haven't already. They have all the latest info including points chart, immigration experiences, exceptions, problems, solutions etc.
