No More Sci-fi!!!
« on: August 12, 2022, 09:39:45 am »
What a drag. A month ago Friday nights was sci-fi night:

-Star Wars
-Star Trek
-Orville

Now all gone!!!

The only thing I see now are shows for IQs of around 70, like Love Island.

WTF!

Isn't the next Star Wars series "Andor" being released soon? A prequel to Rogue One.

I don't understand how a fellow Trekkie could stand hours of Star Wars. Only two of those movies were worth anything. I walked out of the theater during one. I haven't seen the last one. Ugh.

It's like comparing Robert Heinlein to that guy who wrote Buck Rogers. Even as a 10 year old i knew Buck Rogers was bubble gum.

Life's to live! Live! Breathe. Relax. Enjoy. Animals teach us to focus on family, friends and avoid danger. Get what you need and get along with others. That said, some rock the boat, but they know capsizin' it means they're sunk. Some sink, let's swim! The sea's big, great, but has undercurrents.

Trekkie here: TNG, DS9, Voyager. Too young for the Original Series. Didn’t really get into Star Wars. Skipped a lot of the newer Trek series and only really liked the latest one. But I’ve loved all the Star Wars series since The Mandalorian. Most recent movies were a bit shit, though. Rogue One was much better!

Star Wars is a science fantasy
Star Trek is a science fiction

As well you can only watch one or the other! Lines are drawn in the sand

Indeed.

The Twilight Zone stands eternal.

(It bears re-watching if The Mandorlian is your alternative.)

TNG ruined us forever. Nothing rivals it. *sigh*

For a second, I thought you had written "Friday Night Lights".

Sorry. No it's not. ANY faster than light travel is science fantasy.

Sci-fi is hard to do right without a huge budget, and even then they can go bust. It's a high-risk investment that requires good writing to make it work, especially because it often involves taking very complicated concepts and theories and presenting them in a way that the average TV viewer can sort of understand without mentally checking out first -- all while also trying to maintain some level of entertainment and emotional connection between the audience and the series' characters.

It's a tricky balancing act, so a lot of networks just choose to avoid the genre altogether, especially since they can cash in on shows and series that don't need as complicated a formula to work. Exceptions usually involve rehashes of what they already know is popular, like the Star Trek universe. It's a fairly safe investment.

I honestly believe that's the reason why we're seeing more scifi/fantasy blended series these days -- because it's easier to get away with BS'ing the concepts and theories while keeping the audience invested in the characters and stories.

Also, seeing a lot more satire in that regard, too. Today's world is not so much about exploration of the unknown as it is about pointing out the absurd and trying to find meaning in life, the universe and everything despite the absurd. Which works great for scifi and fantasy blends.

Anyway, if you don't mind animation, they've also got that animated series, Star Trek: Lower Decks. It's pretty funny and has three seasons so far.
