Who are your heroes and why?
« on: October 15, 2022, 09:33:54 am »
For me:

1. Gandhi was a hero for facilitating the overthrow of foreign rule by spouting peaceful means. One heralds that aspect of his life.

2. Gretzky is a hero for helping more than needing to seize the moment: he has more assists in NHL hockey history than anyone in over a hundred years has had points (goals & assists combined - that kicks the Russian-sensational Ovechkin not only to the curb, but into the gutter, relative to Gretz, not the rest of the sport).

3. Fossey is a hero because of her scientific reporting on CBC (picked up and ran by BBC) concerning gorilla conservation, that resulted in her murder in Rwanda when i was in junior high (er, middle school).

4. That soldier who stood steadfast in the face of native First Nations protesters (er, sorry, it was an epic moment every Canadian knows) . Not because of the politics, but because of the dedication, poise and resilience in a world where those with guns often use or abuse.

5. South Korean president Kim Dae-jung won the Nobel Peace Prize and i am sad that most of my students didn't know it, nor why (hence my yearly lesson).

6. A man who jumped into a storm-caused torrential river to save a child (gawd, thousands must have done so and've been reported upon over time, but this man - who knew he could not swim - could not stand by and watch a kid die (not a relative of his); he just thought he had to try to do something). That vid from years ago sticks in my head, but man, do i wish i could find it and link it. The greatest heroes are often unnamed and forgotten because they're your friends, family, neighbors or even strangers.

Alexander Ovechkin - will likely be the best goal scorer in NHL history.

Look. Sidney Crosby is 20th in career NHL scoring. Ovechkin isn't on the list (though closest behind). The 37 year old has a little time to climb.

But in terms of goals, he is clearly top 3. (I dunno if i would bet my soul on him over Bossy but no way no how do i bet against Gretz).

Ovechkin needs another two near 50-goal seasons to pass Gretzky in career goals (and laughably waaay trail him in assists).

OV, my man, has zero goals this first couple if goals of the season and has coffed up the puck four times! Ugh.

The puckhandling TEASE is clear early in the video - making Datsyuk look like a trainee in the art of puck control (i mean, seriously, could Pavel hold Wayne's drink).

Best goal scorer LOL. What does that mean?  His goals are the best?  I’m guessing you’re not much of a hockey fan. Ovechkin has a chance of catching or passing Gretzky for most goals, but best goals would be a pretty subjective category.

Not much into heroes but I guess Tankman pretty much takes that title for me.  That took a lot of guts knowing if they didn't run him down the CCP probably would finish the job for them.  It's a pity we will never really know what happened to him.
There is no known medical cure for stupidity!

Pre-History-
Henry V for beating the evil French
Richard the Lionheart and Robin Hood for beating the evil Arabs in the Crusades
Columbus for beating the evil Indians and discovering America

Modern Times-
George Washington for beating the evil British and creating America
King George III for beating the evil Aborigines
Winfield Scott for beating the evil Mexicans
Queen Victoria for beating the evil Maori
Queen Victoria for beating the evil Indians
John MacDonald for beating the evil Indians
Cecil Rhodes for beating the evil Africans
Churchill for beating the evil Sudanese
William McKinley for beating the evil Spanish
John Pershing for beating the evil Germans
Churchill for almost beating the evil Irish
Eisenhower for beating the evil French and Germans
Nimitz for beating the evil Japanese
MacArthur for beating the evil Koreans
Queen Elizabeth & Churchill for beating the evil Malaysians
Schwarzkopf beating the evil Iraqis
W. Bush for beating the evil Afghanis
Donald Trump for beating the evil Democrats

American Olympic athletes who win gold medals and beat the evil countries of the world and put them in their place, like the Dream Team beating the evil Angolans, Croatians and Germans in 1992. People forget that at the time Germany was getting too big for its britches and everyone was sick of their nonsense so we did a great job dunking in their faces. Same with the Croatians trying to hog the spotlight.

I'm just stating facts. History is a story of good people vs. evil and how we move on. It is clear who the good guys are, after all we come from good countries and our people are good (well unless we are fighting each other, then America is always good). If you don't believe in a good vs. evil view of the world and of history, you are just an apologist for evil and probably falling for propaganda.

Napoleon Bonaparte beat the Germans but lost to the Russians.

Adolf Hitler beat Western Europe but lost to the Russians.

The Russians formed a Soviet Union that is as evil as any country's gov't could be described.

What country is evil?

(Psst. The answer is none if you are talking about the population; the gov't officials are in a whole other kettle of wax.)

If you weren't there to see it, Wheygook69 is Marty aka JonVoightCar playing the anti-Marty persona.

He posts the extreme opposite of what Marty really thinks. Guy gets bored too easily.

Is there any greater hero?*And shouldn't every child be taught how to swim as a life skill greater than reading or writing?)

Most people had figured that out though. It wasn't exactly a secret, Marty announced in a thread that he was going to make a hangook parody account (though he went off track with it within half a day). It was amusing seeing a lot of regulars engage his posts seriously though.

I base this off the school of "America is the Greatest Country On EarthEVER". That we beat both Hitler and the Kaiser and Tojo AND Mussolini. And also Saddam Hussein, Osama Bin-Laden, Manuel Noriega and a bunch of others. Meanwhile, the British surrendered to us at Yorktown and everyone else just sucks period. We invented the airplane. Built the A-Bomb. Sent men to the moon. Invented the internet. Invented the smartphone. Invented rap music.

I do have to give credit though to the Brits for the times they beat the French. And the good job they did in beating various evil peoples of the world when they built their empire. They were clearly the good guys there, just like they were the good guys when they held our jock strop while we beat Hitler and Tojo or when they were beating Communist guerillas in various countries they occupied. Like the team you root for when your team isn't playing.

Of course the Democratic party is evil.  However, you are simply cherry-picking one small point, in order to destabilize the sum so that you can appear to justify your ill-thought post.

You' are simply old dust, in old wind.

I agree. But sad people with shrinking prospects, no assets and no
end game need to lash out anyway they can. And for teachers in
Korea, this forum is it.

This sounds like you don't think history is all good vs. evil. That there are fine people on both sides or some limp-wristed "complicated" version of history and conflict. Typical DEMONrat thinking.
