Concerts and live performances you've seen
« on: December 06, 2022, 07:50:25 pm »
Sitting here pondering Kenny Everett for some bizarre reason, and it got me thinking about the dance troupe on his TV show, 'Hot Gossip'. Those girls looked so good, especially their routine to the song 'Supernature'. Naturally I snapped up good seats to their concert when they did a tour. Absolutely sucked. My biggest waste of live performance money, ever!

So, what have you been to over the years? Anything great, anything... :huh: :lipsrsealed:

I've seen;

* Garry Glitter and the Glitter Band
* Mark Williams (probably only NZers and Aussies would know)
* The Hollies, twice
* Deep Purple
* Devo
* B52s
* Cliff Richard
* Ice House, twice
* Don Mclean
* Looking through the glass onion (Jon Lennon's story-while on holiday)
* Hot Gossip
* Jesus Christ Super Star

Comedy

* Billy Connolly
* Hale and Pace

Believe it or not, Cliff Richard was the best...absolutely full-on energy and a great live voice. The worst, excluding Hot Gossip, was Devo. Just these idiots prancing around a stage with prerecorded music. I even doubt that they were actually singing.

Ahh...got to get a hobby over winter, otherwise I'll end up with virtual darts in my head from making too many posts  :blank:

Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, BB King, The Who (2x), Alice Cooper (2x), Stones, ACDC, Rush. Neil Young, Muse (11x), White Stripes (4x), Television, MC5, Dylan (5x), Arctic Monkeys (5x), The Strokes (2x), Gang of Four. Sonic Youth. Wilco.

Honestly, I can't even remember. It would honestly be easier to list bands I haven't seen. If the band is important in a historical context, there's a good chance I've seen them. If they're NME British Indie Darlings from 2003-2009, I've DEFINITELY seen them.

And if it seems like I'm bragging, then that's fine. I take music very seriously.

That's quite a list! Did you see most of them in Canada? There are a few from your list that I would of liked to of seen, but most of the big acts went to Auckland. Us hillbillies down south got the small venue, indoor bands for the most part.

Wilco the band or Wilco Johnson?

'

98% would have been Toronto. And yes, the band Wilco. I've been to Detroit to see Muse, Stripes (cuz obv) and Green Day and the Beastie Boys, two nights in a row at Cobo Hall. Also, saw Muse in Buffalo. They were previewing BHAR.

The craziest damn thing was the Beastie show in Detroit. Talib Kweli was opening (and I LOVE Talib, top ten MC ever) but before the show the giant curtain was closed. So, the curtain opens and there's these tubes and military style climbing walls everywhere. But they're................. . smaller. So, out comes this guy in a tuxedo. "Hello, everyone. Welcome to my show." And then he whistles and then 10 goddamn dogs come running out from stage left and right and they all start synchronised obstacle cours.............i ng? Is that a verb? It went for ten minutes and it was insane. Dogs dancing with dogs, dogs jumping over other dogs. Dogs doing insane tricks on platforms. And the guy was the conductor.

It was insane. I don't even know how to remember or describe it (15 years ago). Also, I didn't want to tell my parents I was going to Detroit so I told them we were going camping. We got gas in Windsor (across the river from Detroit). Who's on the other side of the gas pump? My bloody uncle.

"KEVIN?" Oh, hi Randy. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" We're going to see Green Day and Beastie Boys at Cobo. "WOW." We're staying at the Hotel Yorba. Don't tell Dad. "WE WON'T."

Next family reunion aunt and uncle just winked at me. Parents only found out when we were looking through my concert scrapbook 6 years later hahahahaha "WHEN WERE YOU IN DETROIT??" We told you we were camping. "YEAH, I UNDERSTAND." (we were 20 yo suburban Canadians)

Honestly, I could write a book about my entire concert experience. It might not be amazing, but it's anecdotally insane. I've been to over 150 concerts in my life. And no, I don't mean "I went to the local pub and there were these guys." I mean proper online, in advance bands. I don't expect that you'd have heard of all of them but they are important enough to warrant advance booking for a minimum of 500 people in attendance.

BRAGGGGGGGG (but that's also why I have 4/10 tinnitus)

That's all pretty cool. Some amazing stories and scenes to be told.

Yeah, The tinnitus, it sure sucks having ringing in your ears 24/7. Have it myself. Got tested again this year, and the hearing level's gone down again, (don't tell Marti, he got all antsy last time the subject was broached)  ;D

Off topic;
BTW, I tried makgeolli again last month after 25 years or so between drinks. I just hated it, but after all your spiels, i drank a bottle my wif was given by a monk. Pretty good!

...between drinks of that old sedimentary stuff scooped from a bucket and drank in a bowl about 1990 something...not fine rye whisky or lager  :smiley:

The bottle was white with just the temple name on it (can't remember it). My wife bought it home from a visit to somewhere in Kangwondo on her temple bus trip. It sat in the fridge for weeks, and I got sick of looking at it. Then I remembered you saying that makeolli these days can taste great, so...down it went. Slightly fizzy, tangyish, and clear. I'd drink it again.

I'm not a huge Rob Zombie or Korn fan, but at that age back then? I would have bloody loved that!!!!

And Wu Tang? That's sick. I worked with a black, single mom in Toronto at a movie theatre and her and I would work the day shift together so we became really close. She met Raekwon at his concert one day and he added her on whatsapp. I couldn't belive the texts she was getting. They weren't weird or anything, but she would show me his pics and stuff of him having dinner or buying shoes and I kept thinking, "I'm one degree away from Raekwon, hahaha." Look, Rae is buying pants today. So bizarre. They ended up dating a bit, he would come to Toronto and they'd go out. I really don't think they were EXCLUSIVE, but he'd come and they'd go out for a few evenings and then he F off to do whatever it is touring musicians do.

Erica, you will never read this but I love you (platonically) a lot.

Chili Peppers - in Korea
Pink Floyd - X2
Roger Waters - X2
Scorpions - in Korea
Def Leppard - on acid
Peter Gabriel - X2

I lived on Vancouver Island, so to see a concert required a ferry
ride to Vancouver. So, I haven't seen as many concerts as I wish
I had.

Doesn't make any sense. Waters is IN Pink Floyd (I kid)

I totally agree. After The Wall and the split, Pink Floyd/Roger Waters
went on to do nothing special. Their last album, The Endless River,
was absolute crap.

I've probably been to a couple hundred concerts so there's no way I could make this a complete list off the top of my head.  Definitely not bragging but if you liked live music living in a city like Toronto there was something to go to multiple times a week.  I'll have to go through venues in my head and try to remember what I saw. Plus, having a friend whose mother worked for Molstar communications and a very well-placed friend in MLSE made getting tickets easy.

Rush
The Clash
The Who
Bruce Springsteen
Bryan Ferry
The Pogues (with and without Shane)
STP (Labatt's Blind date Tour. You didn't know who the band was going to be until they came on stage)
David Bowie
Sex Pistols
Neil Diamond (One of the best shows ever)
Creed
The Cure
Tragically Hip
Franz Ferdinand
U2
The Police
Stink
REM
Blondie
The Stones
Public Enemy (Flavor Flav came out with a water gun Uzi before the show to the line waiting outside Club Soda in Montreal)
The Buzzcocks
General Public
Squeeze
The Beach Boys (mom)
Thompson Twins
OMD
Tears for Fears
Depeche Mode
Gordon Lightfoot
Steve Miller Band
Foreigner
Fishbone
Aztec Camera

*Honourable mention goes to Lionel Richie.  My friend and I were given tickets to his show at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto.  As mentioned, his mother worked for Molstar Communications which produced segments for Hockey Night in Canada.  I could tell a great Don Cherry story, but it doesn't belong here.  Anyway, we took the tickets and having no interest in Lionel Richie we scalped them to a couple from India who were so excited to see him.  We assumed the seats were the same we had been given for REM, which were where cameras were usually placed during hockey games.  However, they were for the Molstar executive suite.  We took the money and went to a party.  The next morning I flew back to New Jersey where I was living at the time.  All hell had broken loose at my friend's home as two Indian ladies were shown into the Molstar executive suite instead of the guys they were expecting.

F me, Augie is back. What's your favourite venue in Toronto? Mine was the Mod Club and The Opera House.

And Franz are spectacualr live. I couldn't go to their first concert in Toronto because I was 18 and a half (Ontario legal age is 19 for liquor) so I didn't buy tikets. And then they had to cancel the show and they rescheduled for when I was 19. I went to the signing at HMV Queen W and I told them and they laughed but also apologised/said "Mate, that sucks."

Hindsight something something (it was impossible to know, though)

More Franz stories. I saw them at Ricoh and during the performance, Alex said "Canada, is the Scotland of North America." And we all cheered. So after the show, we were waiting by the bus behind the venue and they come out one by one and I asked him what he meant. He kinda looked taken aback. hahahaha So he kind of took 4 seconds to think and said, "Cold country North of Daddy?"

hahahahaha PERFECT response.

The first person who can name 3 of the 4 people in these photos will get a 500ml bottle of my Christmas beer sent to them. (seriously) It's a Belgian tripel abbey style with cherries and raisins. The only condition is that you write a comment on waygook about how you enjoyed it (or didn't)

And yes, these are MY photos. I rarely grieve for the past, I believe in the present and making life good now (because LORD KNOWS that's all you can do) but talking about these concerts makes me really nostalgic for my 19-23 year old self. Seriously, as I mentioned before, I have literally seen most of the bands that have shaped modern music. I'm really only missing The Beatles and their members and Bowie*. Kraftwerk? Check. Iggy? Check.

* I could have seen Bowie on his Reality Tour but I decided to catch him on the next tour. There was no next tour. DAmn.

Also, I went to prom instead of seeing Lou Reed. I know I'm one of the coolest people now, but I wasn't in high school. I probably ranked 33 percentile. And prom fukking sucked. The entire time I wished I was at the Lou Reed concert at Massey Hall. And then he died a few years later. The only redeeming feature is seeing John Cale (also a Velvet Underground member) play in Cheolwon. He brought out his viola and did Venus In Furs. I genuinely cried. This is the stuff of magic, I'm not exaggerating. You might not like VU, but they're objectively (yes, I mean that) one of the top 10 most important bands of the history of music. Again, I don't use that lightly. We can argue over details and we might not agree on everything, but any top 20 list of the most important bands ever (not artists, bands. This simplifies it a bit because lord knows how many blues artists you could include) has to include Beatles, Stones, Kraftwerk and Velvet Underground. To disagree is foolish, honestly. It's contrarianism and that's fun, but you're wrong. As I said, OBJECTIVEly wrong.

Anyway, good luck on my photo quiz! (and I want names, not bands. Look up the band member's names if you have to but I will not accept "That's the guy from X band")
