Changing from public to Hagwon
« on: December 06, 2022, 07:59:08 pm »
In the middle of March I’ll be finishing my public school position and I’m looking to move to Busan. Changing for personal reasons as want to be in a specific city for a number of reasons.

I was wondering about how people switch E2 visas. If I got a job starting straight after I finish would I need to leave the country to get visa sorted? Do I need to go to my home country or can I just go to the local immigration when I move job. Also as I finish mid month there’s a possibility I will have to get a job starting the beginning of April. But my Visa runs out on the 10th. So would I have to fly back to my home country or nearby country and come back on a tourist Visa until I sign my new contract and go to immigration for my new job ?
Thanks

You won't need to go home. You can get a D10 visa that will tide you over between jobs. Someone more in the know will see this post and confirm this and maybe give you some more info.

i left public for private schools a while ago. your visa has an extra month on it after you finish.  you can stay here and find a job in that time.  if you sign a new contract for a new job, go to immigration immediately and have the new job register your new visa.  Its al very easy, as long as you get it done within the month when your visa is still valid.

No, you have a month after your visa is done.  During that time, get a D10.  It is good for 6 months.  It is a looking for work visa.  You can stay in a hotel, motel, goshiwons?  Stay in Seoul for a bit, then go down and find one in Busan?  Spend 2 or 3 months looking for a quality job.  Plus have a break in between.

Is the concept of opportunity cost lost on you?  :undecided:

There's no opportunity cost if the job pays Korean minimum wage and you take it out of desperation.  Take the time to find something better and higher paying.

If you spend two months without work looking for a job, you've lost two months' worth of income, even if it is minimum wage.

Then, the next 10 plus months are earning less and maybe the next 2 or 3 years which is a long term screw over.

You can always look for a new job while working at your current one. It's not like there's a huge discrepancy between hogwons.

There are enough intangibles that looking while on a D10 would be very advantageous.  I also would go to the D10 if I were to take a break after this contract for the down time.  Six months to look at your leisure and having three months where you can leave the country would be really nice if you can swing it.

So Scotty was muted?  Punishment for posting bad jobs?  Every recruiter who does that should be muted.

He was muted because his webpage was compromised and he was posting ads for underwear models.

Changing from Public to Hakwon is akin to moving from Seoul to Seattle.

Down?

Teach whatever lessons you want instead of forced materials? Have small classes of high level students instead of huge classes of waaay vavied level kids? Live in a city never either too hot or too cold in anyone's books?

Give me an academy in Seattle over a public school in Seoul any day. A step DOWN? Hashtag run down! (Getting a green card is another thing)
Help others, especially animals. Say what you think, be considerate of others. Appreciate more than deprecate. Teach well, jump on teachable moments. Enjoy Korea as it is, without changing it. Dwell! Yet, at times, change your life for the better. "The most important [thing] is to have a good day."

Van has never worked at a public school, yet he considers himself an authority on the topic.  I have worked at hakwans and public schools.  Overall, I give public schools the win.  Van can't compare the two so he always goes off on how great his hakwan is.  I think he's just compensating for the fact he has a job no one wants with hours no one over 27 wants in a city no one wants to live in.  And after twenty years he still doesn't have his own housing and lives in his school for God's sake.

There are good hakwans.  Van doesn't work for one.  I have done both. I speak from experience.

Van Twitter is happy where he is.  His tiny, tender heart does not coincide well with being a moderator, and Van Twitter deletes posts that ruffle his delicate, subjective feathers (despite being "the big guy")...but...I can understand the value of actually being able to teach in a good academy.  Public schools in Korea.....good luck, just like academies.

Waygook.org moderators are ALL cowardly dickheads (we are what we eat) and shag-bags.  Van Twitter is a tender-footed tosser with too many cats, operates a possible sock account while J.V.C. (a.k.a, Marti/Steel Rails) is simply using up everyone else's oxygen.

How's the English teaching climate in China? I have a friend who often talks about going. He hasn't made the jump yet but I'm sure he will. I'd feel much better knowing he'd be able to land on his feet over there.
