Christmas Plans?
« on: December 23, 2022, 01:55:17 pm »
It's that special time of year when the difference between our home countries and Korea seems to be at its biggest. Bearing that in mind, what do people have planned? Will you try to recreate a more familiar Christmas feeling, ignore it completely or maybe you're all loved up and will spend the day taking selfies and making little finger hearts?

My Christmas eve will be spent mostly preparing for the next day. But there will be a few Christmas movies and a bottle of wine to be enjoyed. Die Hard and Bad Santa are on deck but I think I need at least one feel good movie this weekend.
I have invited a few people over for Christmas day and we will do a gift swap while enjoying some food and drink. The other thread may have inspired an attempt at eggnog if I can find everything needed. And of course, the day will probably finish with a quick call on zoom with family to act as a reminder I'm missing Christmas at home

Going to Loub Blanc for lunch tomorrow for their xmas set menu. Then it's off to Cheonggyecheon for the lanterns. Sunday gonna brew a Pale Ale Malt and Simcoe hop beer. (This is called a smash beer where you use one malt and one hop).

Tomorrow will be dedicated to baking and cooking for Christmas day (bar the roast meat-was ribs now pork belly). Our granddaughter will help me.
Christmas morning, after my eldest and hubby arrive, the usual opening of presents under the tree. Then carols and coffee, plus phone the youngest down in Jeju.
Christmas lunch this year, then watch a movie or just chill. Drinks will start about 4 o'clock...some wine or Beak-Saju, maybe a couple of beers. No Rye whiskey until New Year.

This looks very good. What is on the set menu for tomorrow?

Do you have a go-to Christmas movie?

Start morning on saturday by cooking a giant pot of chili for a potluck at the girlfriends place with about 7-8 friends.  drinks and games late afternoon til evening.  wake up and exchange some gifts.  maybe watch a movie sunday afternoon and eat the leftovers. have a bunch of persimmons that are finally ripe enough to do something with,  could make a persimmon cake, or jam, or cookies...  something along those lines.

Is this a must watch every year for you?

Don't remember seeing the whole thing more than once. But was often on in the background over the Christmas period. Can't say I remember it much. But I know it's seen as a classic Christmas movie.

'Home Alone'. They're all good, but the first is best.

This is not true. Only 1 and 2 are worth watching.

I'll concede that one. I should have said 1, 2, and 3. Yes, I do like 3. The rest...not great.

I had to google it. I didn't even know there was more than 3  The 4th to 6th installments of the Home Alone franchise don't look great

My own plans revolve around calling up family, roasting a chicken, baking some cookies, and watching a bunch of movies while I'm cooking and baking. Will also be doing a Secret Santa gift-exchange with some friends some time in the evening. Half of them want to go drinking, too, but I'll ditch before then.

I always have to watch A Christmas Story (1983) and Scrooged (1988) around this time, but I also tend to watch The Polar Express, The Ref, and The Family Man.

They released a sequel to "A Christmas Story" this year where all of the kids are now grown up. It's not as good as the first film, but it's actually a decent and heartwarming sequel.

You should give "Violent Night" a watch. It's hilarious.

It's that special time of year when the difference between our home countries and Korea seems to be at its biggest. Will you try to recreate a more familiar Christmas feeling, ignore it completely…

For the first time in 10yrs I actually did try the “recreate it” thing: got a tree, lights, socks, turkey, presents, family slept over, Santa came at night, and then open gifts in the morning. Just so the kids could experience it once and make their own decision. But this year ignoring it completely.

It’s a foreign holiday, and even the 30% of Christians here don’t really know what the Christmas rituals are. People have never had a turkey, don’t know what gravy is, never had a pumpkin pie, and they absolutely hate this food when they do try it (“Too greasy! Can we order Puradak chicken?”). Just like nobody in America wants to bow to ancestor’s graves, sit on the floor, and eat real Korean food. So I just ignore it and celebrate the real holidays (Chuseok and Seollal).

I will be opening cans of cat food about a dozen times (have 11 cans keyed up, may go corner store if needed).

I am jacked. It's Christmas. There's NFL football to watch, two 8+ year-old cats to hug and countless street cats to feed.

I am awaiting the first - beautiful - sky signs of dawn to rock and roll.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Help others, especially animals. Say what you think, being considerate of others. Appreciate more than deprecate. Teach well and jump on teachable moments. Enjoy Korea as it is, without changing it. Yet, at times, change your life for the better. "The most important [thing] is to have a good day."
