Fictional educational institutions you would like to work at
« on: January 16, 2023, 02:02:12 pm »
Title is fairly self-explanatory. Which educational setting in any fictional universe would you want to work at, and why? For me it would be...

The Derek Zoolander Institute for Kids who Can't Read Good. You get to teach reading and skydiving to underprivileged kids. How cool is that?

The School of Rock depicted at the end of School of Rock. You'd get to work with Jack Black in his prime.

Hogwarts in Harry Potter, although there are other magical academies I would consider. Think how awesome it would be to work at a school where the paperwork and house points were automated.

Macdonald Hall.  Don't know if any Canadians would still be up on those books.  I was very into Gordon Korman books as a kid and MacDonald sounded like a great place to be a student and a fun place to teach.

Better than Degrassi.

The kids in Degrassi were mainly just self-destructive. The kids at MacDonald Hall brutally harassed teachers they didn't like.

But, they would like me.  I could still remember what it was like to be in their shoes.  Unlike that headmaster Mr. Sturgeon.

I'm not sure those kids would have treated any teacher well, even the ones they did like.

Yeah, it would be pretty awesome to be able to do those field trips, but I'm not sure that parents these days would consent to any of it. It'd be cool just to have that bus, though.

Well, I dunno if I'd want to teach there, or be a student, either, but there is some mythical, romantic quality about the Bamfylde School of RF Delderfield's To Serve Them All My Days (BBC miniseries is on YT--and quite good) and the whole British public school thing speaks to me.  The idyllic "Battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton" vibe, "masters" in their robes, ivy-encrusted buildings, quadrangles, school "houses", day boys, of which I was one, and boarders.

I'm an Anglophile, and lived in then-Rhodesia where I attended Chaplin School in the 70s when bespectacled, bushy-mustached masters (Mr Hand, hello?) still rode their bikes to school, and modern English teachers with their sleeves rolled up sat on the edge of their desk and rapped with us about 1984. I had Latin with Assistant Headmaster Pluke, and got six-of-the-best for accidentally spilling India ink.  Yeah, we had little porcelain inkwells and drew ink into our fountain pens with a lever thingy, wearing our school ties and knee-socks.

I hated a lot of it, but did have some really fine teachers that really inspired me, and I loved playing rugby.  In the book, there were a few lousy Martinet teachers, but also some really great ones, and I would hope to be one of those.

One thing I wish the rest of the world would adopt was the school calendar (not from the book, but from Rhodesia)--we had three trimesters of roughly three months, each followed by a one-month vacation period.  This is, I think, optimal.  In the US, we get about the same vacation, but a one month break is enough time for a solid long trip, but not so long you have to spend the first two months of the new school year re-learning everything you forgot in June, July and August!

Midtown High School, i would have said in 1987.
Help others, especially animals. Say what you think, being considerate of others. Appreciate more than deprecate. Teach well and jump on teachable moments. Enjoy Korea as it is, without changing it.
