]Where to get Korean subtitles?

First, you need to install support for Korean.

Windows XP

Go into Control Panel -> "Date, Time, Language and Regional Options" (or in Classic View, "Regional and Language Options").

You should now be in a window titled "Regional and Language Settings".

Click on the "Languages" tab.

Make sure "Install files for East Asian Languages" is checked. This will take about ~230MB of extra space on your drive.

After your computer has Korean-language support,

Use the Korean language version of GOM player (GOM, English or Korean, is NOT Mac compatible). You can get it here: http://app.gomtv.com/gom/GOMPLAYERSETUP.EXE

Open the movie in GOM Player. If a little box doesn't pop up in the lower left corner with a link to the subtitle file, you just click on 자막도우미 (subtitle helper). It's the first little gray circle at the bottom of the player. Then, a menu pops up. Hit 자막 찾기 (subtitle finder).
A website will open with search results. Click on the first file and check the size. It's surprisingly good at matching files even when the names are slightly different, but it can make mistakes. On the next page, click the orange button next to the file name that says 바로보기 (watch right now). The file will download, open in Gom Player, and the file will be saved in the same directory as the movie that's playing. Next time, the subs will start automatically.

Subtitles are available from GOM for almost every movie that's a popular torrent. However, sometimes you can't search for new movies; the words in the title are not permissible search terms. I had this problem with Iron Man 2 and Sherlock Holmes, but nothing else that I can remember. Even popular TV shows are available within 24-48 hours after airing. My girlfriend is a huge fan of South Park, Simpsons and Big Bang Theory, so we almost always watch those together with subs not long after they first air.

How to load Korean subtitles manually?


VLC Player:

Use an older version of VLC (1.1.9 or earlier)

First, download the Batang font (http://cooltext.com/Download-Font-%EB%B0%94%ED%83%95+Batang) and put in the c:\windows\font folder. Or you can use the Gulim font (again, put in the c:\windows\font), which can be downloaded here:

default encoding = korean euc-kr/cp949

font = Batang (or Gulim, depending on which font you downloaded)

MAC:

in VLC: preferences-> subtitles&osd-> set your default encoding: macintosh and for your font choose the applegothic font (references: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=395327).

GOM English Version

Should work automatically. If not, go to preferences (bottom center/centre of the window) and click "Subtitle."   Set font = "Batang" or "Gulim" (again, depending on which one you downloaded) and click the "Others" tab and make sure the 'Code page" is set to "Korean."

The subtitles aren't in sync.

VLC and GOM Player allow you to adjust the timing of subtitles.

VLC

Look under "Preferences" -> "Hotkeys" and then look for "Subtitle delay" to find out which keys are used to adjust the timing. You can change the hotkeys if you wish.

GOM

Go to the "Control Panel" (press F7 to access it) then "Subtitle."

Adjusting the timing may make it  appear to sync initially, but it may become out of sync later on. Thus, you may have to adjust the timing every now and then.

To ensure perfect synchronization, you must make sure that the video file's name corresponds to the subtitle's file name.

For example, I searched for the subtitles of "Fast Five" via http://www.cineaste.co.kr/ and one of the subtitles available is "Fast.Five.2011.720p.BDRiP.XViD.AC3-IMAGiNE.smi."  To find the matching video file, I used a torrent search engine and typed, "Fast Five Imagine." ("Imagine" is the name of the group/individual who uploaded the file).  However, you won't always find a match, especially with older movies.

If the names don't match, your next best bet is look at the file size. For example, the following subtitle is for a movie file that's around 697 MB ("엑시트 운즈 (Exit Wounds, 2001) 1CD 697M"):

If the video file you downloaded is more or less 697 MB, there's a good chance it'll sync perfectly.

To add subtitles to movies or (Hardsubbing) you need to open a movie editor. I use vobsub. I import the movie i want to hard sub then open the sub file and then save the movie so that hte sub file is attached to the movie. Haven't done it in a while so the details are not exactly clear. I have to get back to that hehe....

You can also make your own sub files by using AgeisSub or Subtitle workshop both of which are free (by the way, so is Vob sub but you may have to download additional codec's for it to work). With both Ageis and Subtitle workshop, you can import the sub file and sync it to the movie or create your own subs (If you're fluent enoguh in Korean)....

I found this Shrek craft online and modified it to be more of a "Christmas Shrek." I plan to use it when I show my elementary kids Shrek the Halls during winter camp. (I also got rid of the color, because having kids color in their own Shrek takes more time...  )

Just go to naver.com and type "simpsons" or "심슨" in the search bar.  You should find a ton under the category 동영상...

One way to have dual subs is to re-encode the film with the subtitles "hardcoded" into the film in one language, then open the sub file in the other language, and reposition it on the screen. If you do this, you may want to check first that the timing matches up properly, or you'll have subs showing up against the wrong dialogue.

I have a ton of movies on my laptop that I could show my students throughout the year, but I'm at a loss as to how to attach Korean subtitles.  Just wondering what the process is for finding Korean subtitles for movies you already have on your hard drive.  Or do you have to go to specialty sites and download movies with attached subtitles as a single download?  Any advice would be helpful...
