Hey, how's it going? This is my first post, but I thought I'd throw up a couple ppts I threw together for my coteacher's open class. They aren't the best, but hopefully they help!

"Let's go guess" is just a guess the picture game. The pictures are broken up into four parts, so just click on one of the four corners to show a part of the picture (which will then disappear) and then "SHOW" to show the entire picture. I usually use this stuff to grab the students' attention at the start of the class before using that horrible CD.

"Let's Go matching" is supposed be a "Treasure Hunting game" to combine a memory game and a battleship style sentence making game together to get the kids to say at least 3 sentences. In order to "hunt" for treasure the students have to get a match and say the sentence. Click the "no" symbol or whatever to make the picture hidden again. (Thanks to whoever made the original ppt Matching game, it was brilliant!) Switch between the game slides by clicking "But when?" and "Back" after they choose the treasure, otherwise it might not work? The kids seemed to like the One Piece cartoon theme that went along with it.

I'm kind of new to this, so please let me know if there are any problems with the files and whatnot.
Thanks!

Yikes! That matching game file is huge, so here's it as a pptx to make it a little easier.
oh yeah, I forgot to mention I used these during the second period of the lesson.
Thanks!

Does anyone have any ideas for a speaking game for this chapter? I played the matching game last week and the students loved it and I have to do another lesson for this chapter tomorrow. I am having a difficult time thinking of a game that is not a ppt game but rather something to get them up and speaking.

Let me know! Thanks ;D

Re: Grade 5 Lesson 8: Let's Go Swimming, speaking activity.
« Reply #5 on: June 21, 2010, 11:59:27 am »
Here is a speaking/memory activity i created for this lesson. I used it for the third period, as the kids need to understand the dialogue for it to be successful.
The object of the game is to find a person within your group that can go fishing, swimming, shopping etc. with you. The time and activity must match.
The first student within each group to find a friend for all activities wins.
The printouts will explain it a little more.

That looks like a great activity. I will try that next week!

Here is the activity I used for the first period today. You put the students in a group of 4. Each group gets one worksheet and they should cut the worksheet into 5 pieces. Each student will have one piece of paper and then one piece to write the expressions on. Student 1 will start and read sentence 1 and then student 2 reads sentence 1, and student 3 and 4 do the same. After each student reads sentence 1, they have to guess the activity and write the correct expression. The correct expression for sentence one is Let's go hiking. The first group to write all 5 expressions correctly is the winner.

Same game different lesson. There are photos and pictures from the book for GO and PLAY. I hope to have a Ghostbuster game and a Pirate game for this lesson later tonight.

I like the song "Let's Go Fly a Kite" for a number of lessons.  There's a film clip from Mary Poppins on Youtube that you can show which has subtitles.  However, for learning the song, I thought more was needed that simply Karaoke-type subtitles.  Although I am working on a PPT song with lyrics for "Let's Go Fly a Kite", it's not quite done yet.  In the meantime, please enjoy part one of the "Let's Go Fly a Kite" Q and A.

Please view this slowly with F5 first to get an idea of how it's supposed to proceed.  You can go down the rows and ask the students questions based on the slides (some questions are presented for you).  To the consternation of my co-teacher, I encourage my students to respond by saying "I don't know" when faced with a question they don't know the answer to, or simply don't understand.  (My co-teacher wishes to only ask questions that ALL students can answer every time.)  I try to pitch the questions so that some can and some can't answer, and work off the creative tension.  If the students are lively, I might call for volunteers instead of marching down the aisles one after another.

In any event, the goal is to get the students singing the song, understanding the lyrics, and picturing the meanings in their head (with absolutely no code-switching confusions over Hangul).  Whether it is better to do this by presenting the whole song at once, or in pieces as I have started here, I have no idea.  Please let us know how this works for you; emendations are welcome.

It may be worthwhile, somewhere down the road on this lesson plan, to bring a kite into the classroom, perch it up in the corner, and have one of the students hold on to the string while they sing.

Here's the whole song to go with the "Let's Go Fly a Kite" Q & A.  I tried part one with a 5th grade class, and after we replayed the last few slides a few times (the ones with the music), most of them were both singing well and understanding what they were singing about.  You may want to wait until Part 2 of the Q & A (not ready yet) before hitting them with the whole song.  I also want to do a karaoke version of this and am posting the .wav file in case someone wants to beat me to it.  The trick to putting music in a PPT is to add it as a sound to the first slide, and then have no sounds for the subsequent slides.  Unfortunately, the autosynching on this may not fly as smoothly on some machines, depending on the internal clock, so if you find the words and the music don't match, click through manually.

the pirate game is fantastic btw.  I think I'll try Let's Go Fly A Kite for my warm up song for this lesson.  karaoke style works for my students pretty well.

How did you edit the words for the pirate game?  I'd like to change the words on the map screen to 5th grade words.

To edit words for the pirate game:
1. They're pictures so you can use a picture of a word or use wordart.  For wordart make the word and color it however you want.
2. Right click and hyperlink it to a specific slide.
3. Then go to Custom Animations and choose an 'exit' (red stars).
4. Right click on the exit and click on (T) timing.
5. Click Triggers.  Click on the bottom one and find the 'picture' from the list.  It should be the same name as the word.
6. You're done.

Hope this helps.

does anyone have any advise on explaining the use of let's go swimming and let's go play tennis? while planning this lesson my co-teacher made the mistake of saying "let's go playing tennis". it's a tough one to explain, i think it has something to do with the verb "to play" in this context being transitory (it has an object) and so it is used in the base form and that "swimming" in the other case is a noun not verb?? this is very complex though and trying to explain it to my co-teacher was a bit hard. he seemed to get it in the end but i don't think this will go down so well with 5th grade kids. i have done the first part of this lesson and already i heard some kids saying "let's go playing ..." so i know i will have to deal with this confusion in the next class. so if anyone knows of a very simple/ basic way to explain this please let me know!!

Chloe
usually it has to do with competitive activities versus solo

try this

http://esl.about.com/od/vocabularyquizzes/a/sporting_vocabulary_quiz.htm for a simple explanation and quiz

I'm also not sure that "Let's go play......." is technically correct.  It should be "go and play" as they are two separate verbs.

Hey Chloe, in my class we're teaching them as two separate expressions: "Let's go..." and "Let's play..."

Here's a Ghostbusters Game to go along with this chapter.
