Grade 4 - Lesson 8 - Can you help me? (Frances Sohn et al)
« on: June 21, 2011, 01:42:56 pm »
Here's a basic vocab ppt which expands some on the language in the text book, and a little game I put together to kill time. It uses the characters from last year's book, but I don't think the kids will mind particularly.

There isn't a thread for this lesson posted yet so please help me moderators!

This is an introductory PPT with directions on how to play a game with the cards in the back of the student's books. I must admit that this isn't especially fine work but hopefully someone can use it or augment it!

minsu's adventure was brilliant. i fear it is too easy for my kids. i see it as a good warm up or review activity.

For lesson 2 - play the game suggested but adjust the dice throwing so that odd numbers means move 2 spaces forward, and even numbers means move one space back.

Then I played pass the ball speed game - divide classes into three.. Play one team at a time.. They have 2 minutes to pass the ball as fast as possible * One student says" 'Can you help,' then passes to next student who says"yes, I can'... When I shout out 'No I cant' then the answer must change to 'No I cant'.. 2 minutes per team.. takes about 10 minutes total  - often they want to play again

:)

here's a "blazing pens" (speed writing game).

for a twist, i'm going to let the two fastest teams pull a card from a bag letting them know how many points they got (or if they got a bomb)

For this lesson we performed some roleplays of the LIttle red hen story.

First my co-t and I told the story for the students, then using the story cards they students but the pictures in order. Then we gave them time to practise the dialogue and at the end a few pairs came up to perform at the front of class.

We have animal headmasks so the students were able to wear those when they came to the front.

I modified the practice slides that someone else posted just a little, and added a Dice game.  For those who haven't played, you need one dice.  Divide the class into teams (I prefer 3), and write the numbers 1-6 on the board for each team.  After they answer a slide correctly, they roll the dice.  Erase the numbers on the board as the team rolls them.  The first team to erase all 6 numbers wins.

I have to assign grades for reading, writing, listening and speaking. So, I will be giving a test in the next week or so. I took the speaking test that someone kindly uploaded in one of the earlier lessons(thanks for that) and added a reading and writing page at the end.

I will print two pages on one sheet, cut them in half and have my co-teacher oversee that part while I'm giving the Listening/Speaking test in the hall.

Note: I had the writing portion of the test as all blanks, but the head 4th grade teacher said it was way too hard. Leaving just one or two blank letters was her suggestion.

Seems I forgot to upload the file. Edited to upload it.

Here is another Little Red Hen with roleplay.

I took the pictures and base of the story from Starfall. I just changed the target language some.

The role play is the last slide, you can print, cut it in half and distribute.

Thanks ruthierolo for giving me the idea.

Here are some PPTs and a board came instead of using the tiny little one in the book. I changed the rules as well, to just rolling the dice, move your mice.

Here is a fun short clip that I used with my kids. We watch it once, then the second time I pause the clip throughout and ask them to translate the dinosaur or cave man's actions into English. As they are translating, I elicit the language structures of the unit. Hope this is useful.

Nice work Mr. Mac. My students will love this. Getting them to articulate what's going on might be tough.....but they'll see the funny side

I forgot to say that I point to the lesson title to elicit "Can you help me?" and draw a smiley face on the board for "Sure, I can." and a sad face for "Sorry, I can't"

I put together a quick fill-in-the-speech-bubble PPT, using stills from the video for practice after viewing. I used the video with my 6th graders who hated everything last year, and they loved it!

For a nice review game i gave each student a word that has been taught in class. Each student has a word that can create a sentence with the other words that students have.

example:
Can you help me? each word is given to a student.

Students have to walk aroudn the class to try to find students with other words to make the correct sentence. Students who make a sentence the fastest get a point. I did this game with my 6th graders and they really liked it. It gets a little loud and out of control.. but its good practice for them. You can make students switch words and try it again for more practice.

Using most of the key vocabulary i made a bomb game for lesson 8. I am using it for the 3rd period class.
Hope this helps you save time preparing!
