Top 20 Cities
« on: July 04, 2010, 09:22:25 PM »
My co-teacher wanted the students to learn about different cities around the world, so I was able to to do 10 cities a day with the students and the filled in the worksheet.

We learned how to say "hello" in each language of the country and we reviewed all of the famous spots. If you've been to any of the cities it'd be nice to put in your own photos or change some of the famous spots.

After another day with review worksheet we played the Typhoon 20 cities game and the students loved it!!!

The 3rd grade middle schoolers did a fabulous job, where as the 2nd graders just didn't care. I only did top 10 cities with 1st graders and that worked well too!

the first powerpoint presentation seems to require some text converter to open, which appears unavailable.  do you know anything about this?

You included the world trade center as a sight to see in New York. Really?

You do know that the world trade centre was destroyed in a terrorist attack in 2001, don't you?

although not my creation, I corrected the careless NYC mistake and also color-coded the text to make reading a little easier on the eyes. share this version and give the original author some slack.

actually yes, I am quite aware that the world trade center is no longer there... BUT in the USA we still consider it a site, and the site that it happened at is still one of the most frequently visited places in NYC. I explain to my students that even though the actual buildings are no longer there they are there in our memories as a reminder of what happened on 9/11.

I'm sorry about the special text needing to open the first one I actually don't know about that.

And I have to say thanks to all of you for the warm welcome on my first try to help others out on this site... and what will be my last due to how negative and demeaning others can be. I guess my impression of a "helpful atmosphere" was a bit naive.

Matthew, I understand your pain.

People upload stuff here out of the goodness of their hearts- there is really no reason to upload stuff here other than trying to help others.  I think the WTC is ok in there- it is a huge attraction in NYC. And it is a good lesson. Don't be discouraged.

just for clarification, I wasn't in pain or anything like that. In fact I think it was a great little PPT. I just think that the inclusion of the WTC without proper written explanation was careless. I have every confidence that which most teachers would explain this in their class orally if nothing else. It was a careless mistake but not a grave mistake. I'm certainly not bashing anyone and if anyone was offended by the reupload, let me know and I'll take it down.

Let's keep this place positive, people ^^

I don't think you should be discouraged. I think it's a great powerpoint and good that you included the World Trade Centre. I'm not America and I noticed it immediately (as anybody teaching in Korea should) and thought huh? But then realised my kids, although elementary students, are pretty bright and there should be a few of them that would pick up on it too. Planning on using this as is for my after school group. It's always good to generate some discussion and interaction in class. And surely as teacher's we're all capable of elaboration and telling the kids about things. I do not think powerpoint presentations should be doing all the work. Also there's a lot to be said for editing things you download if they don't suit you.  :)

thanks for the encouragement everyone, and Matthew I'm glad you reuploaded it. Especially because you were saying the text was an issue. So that is totally a good thing.

I'm glad some of you see the point in adding in the WTC and I really do think for this lesson it is important to know all of the sites. I researched all of them and it was great giving the students more background info on all of the places, plus it helped them remember the sites better when we had more of a discussion. Thanks everyone for the feedback. I appreciate those of you that cut me some slack :) Happy Teaching Everyone!

I used this in my class yesterday and I thought it was great. However, the one of the photos from the Vancouver sites was incorrect. The site should be correct as "Canada Place" and the photo used is wrong. The photo was actually Belvedere Palace in Vienna.

No worries though, I really appreciate the hard work the original poster and all of the other corrections that people have made. This is a great game and my students really liked it. Thanks everryone.

This is a great power point, thanks for this. Would definitely be using this next semester, but think I would add Cape Town SA in there too, as I'm from South Africa!  ;)

BTW, the famous bridge  shown the in photos of London is called 'Tower Bridge', not 'London Bridge'.

I think this lesson is fantastic, including the WTC was definitely NOT a mistake, it's a huge part of American history, and like Heiny mentioned, still very much a memorable site to visit while in NYC ~ thanks for your hard work and for sharing with all of us! :)

Totally would have put Cape Town in there... and not just because I'm from South Africa. It was voted the second most must-see city before you die in the world.
