OK to show Simpsons to younger elementary school classes?
« on: July 04, 2011, 11:52:54 am »
So my kids are getting really restless as finals are over (and they're even more restless during afterschool classes).  I've been thinking of letting them watch Simpsons episodes with Korean subtitles, but I'm not sure if they're too young for it.  I'm referring specifically to 2nd and 3rd grade elementary.  What do you guys think?  I know some of the humor will be lost on them, but I'm mainly concerned about some of the "mature" things (ya know...little sexual references or an occasional damn) that pop up sporadically throughout the show.  What do you guys think?

i was thinking the same thing after seeing so many people post about simpsons with korean subtitles. I wouldn't do it, probably even for high school. I mean some episodes might alright for older kids, but I had a flash of watching the episode where Homer getting accused of sexual harassment with my students and that was enough for me to forget the idea

My co teacher shows episodes to my grade 4 elementary class without any concern.  I don't think many of them will pick up on the adult humour in it.  As for showing it to high school students - I think it would be ok.  They see worse in music videos and at the movies.

I would definitely say "no". It's rated "15" here in Korea meaning kids under 15 shouldn't see it. I also did a discussion with my high school students about American TV shows and a couple said that they didn't think it was appropriate even for their own age group.

I have been told by Koreans that the Simpsons is considered a "kids" show here.  With that in mind, some episodes I would never show and some are fine

All it takes is one kid and their parent to go to the school principal with the fact that you're showing a TV show that is rated for 15 years old.  At that point, they won't care whether the native teacher thought the content was appropriate or not.  Just saying.

Chances are that they would complain about something they didn't understand. You know, the usual "cultural misunderstanding."
Get a Korean teacher's approval and you'll be covered in case anyone complains.

I think you can do better than that... try supersimplesongs.com, wearebusybeavers, or Sesame Street.
