High School - Lessons About High School
« on: August 17, 2010, 09:38:27 am »
[mod edit: changed name of the thread and merged similar topics together]
formerly named "High School Cliques"

Trying to put something up for students that's related to high school stereotypes, but it's not polished and is a bit scattered.  I just wanted to do something fun for the students who have me for an extra week (because school starts on wednesday). The next lesson was high school clubs, so I thought a lesson plan on cliques might be interesting..

It all started with this triangle started from Kanye West. So the ice breaker would be about that.  Then we would talk about which of the three attributes they like most, leaning them to talk about self image and popularity, going into the lesson.

First, going over some popular high school cliques and their stereotypes. Then, eventually having students come up with their own ideas of high school cliques they encounter.

Is it possible to upload a .ppt version as well? The lesson does look good though and I will be trying it in my extra classes soon.

It definitely needs some tinkering or perhaps I'm still in summer mode, but that lesson just didn't feel like it was coming together.  Let me know if you have better luck with it.  Uploaded a ppt version here.

American High Schools Lesson
I am doing an American culture unit for my high school first-graders, and I put together a lesson on American high schools for one of the topics.  I adapted a quiz about high schools and supplemented with additional information.  First, the students work with their groups to take the quiz as a sort of pre-test, and then they exchange papers with another group while we go through the answers.  There are more activities and more information about American high schools with the answer portion of the quiz.  I did the lesson with a couple of classes before midterms, and the students seemed to be interested in the topic.

The last part of the powerpoint, with the activity about "Stick to the Status Quo" I added in case there was extra time, but I haven't gotten to it in any of my classes so far.  I have a hand-out with the lyrics to go with it.

Let me know what you think!

A good movie to show them about what high school in America is kind of like is "Mean Girls".   They will like it.

I always assumed Mean Girls was grossly exaggerated.  Is American High School really like that??

A teacher in my school has been showing "Bring it On" (the 3rd one I think) to explain American High School to her students. Had to explain to her that it was exaggerated.

American High School Lesson Plan
« Reply #8 on: September 18, 2011, 07:40:01 pm »
Here's a lesson plan I created about American high school. Know that it is for my all-girls high school, hence the many photos from Twilight and Mean Girls.  showed the intro to Mean Girls at the beginning of class to give an "example" of American high school. Then showed the powerpoint. There is a worksheet for teams of 4-6 students, and then a worksheet for students to fill out on their own. As teams they create their own American high school, individually they create a schedule with classes using a vocabulary sheet. It went over pretty well, it got the students speaking a lot of English and were very interested in American high school life.

This is a great idea. I'm always looking for future ideas. I teach at an all girls high school too, but mine has rather low English levels. I'll have to revamp this, dumb it down, and add somethings about my own school. Thanks for the ideas.

This surprisingly worked with lower levels. Given lots of explanations and repetition, the 1st graders understood everything.

This lesson seems like an interesting idea. I'll have to see if I can incorpoarte this lesson plan into one of my future lessons.

Culture Lesson: American High Schools
« Reply #17 on: May 11, 2012, 08:49:05 am »
Hi All,

So my high school students expressed an interest in learning some differences between American and Korean high schools. The games that this lesson is based around are two that I adapted from two other teachers whom I met at a teachers training seminar. The questions are based on my high school experience and the things that I remember...

1st game: This or That

This is just a simple game that I start the class with in order to get the students energized, thinking, and speaking. This game is based entirely on my high school experience and serves as another way for my students to learn more about me.

2nd game: Auction game quiz

For this game, break your students into groups.

Provide each group with "X" amount of dollars (I gave each of my student groups--$1000 fake usd which I found through an online search of money templates).

Explain the concept of an auction/bidding--I had the help of my co-teacher foir this step

Their were eight different questions in my game covering different topics pertaining to american high schools. I tried to mix the difficulty of questions. Each group must buy at least one question.

Once the game begins and each team has purchased their respective teams, I read the question and give each team 15-30 seconds to answer the question. If a team answers their question incorrectly I give another teeam the chance to correctly answer. Each correct answer is worth double the value of the purchase price. The team with the most money at the end of the game wins.

Lastly I was able to find a video of my high school on youtube and showed that at the very end of a few classes where there was time left over.

High School in the United States
« Reply #18 on: November 14, 2012, 11:48:03 am »
This is a lesson about High School life in the United States. I attended a very large, liberal school in California...therfo re the information might not represent all schools in the US. The classes enjoyed the lesson..and at the end I had them write down 3 things they learned and one thing they would change about highschool in Korea. I also added more questions that I just read off w/o having a slide so that it required them to solely listen.

On the slide about sports-they were very surprised to find out out that some schools have swimming pools and students see each other in bathing suits...

I was thinking of doing a similar lesson. Thanks for this!
I am from Canada and not everything is the same, but similar enough that I can just edit your ppt! This is great! THANKS! :)
