Is it possible to upload a .ppt version as well? The lesson does look good though and I will be trying it in my extra classes soon.

I am doing an American culture unit for my high school first-graders, and I put together a lesson on American high schools for one of the topics.  I adapted a quiz about high schools and supplemented with additional information.  First, the students work with their groups to take the quiz as a sort of pre-test, and then they exchange papers with another group while we go through the answers.  There are more activities and more information about American high schools with the answer portion of the quiz.  I did the lesson with a couple of classes before midterms, and the students seemed to be interested in the topic. 

The last part of the powerpoint, with the activity about "Stick to the Status Quo" I added in case there was extra time, but I haven't gotten to it in any of my classes so far.  I have a hand-out with the lyrics to go with it.

A good movie to show them about what high school in America is kind of like is "Mean Girls".   They will like it.

A teacher in my school has been showing "Bring it On" (the 3rd one I think) to explain American High School to her students. Had to explain to her that it was exaggerated.

This is a great idea. I'm always looking for future ideas. I teach at an all girls high school too, but mine has rather low English levels. I'll have to revamp this, dumb it down, and add somethings about my own school. Thanks for the ideas.

This lesson seems like an interesting idea. I'll have to see if I can incorpoarte this lesson plan into one of my future lessons.

So my high school students expressed an interest in learning some differences between American and Korean high schools. The games that this lesson is based around are two that I adapted from two other teachers whom I met at a teachers training seminar. The questions are based on my high school experience and the things that I remember...


1st game: This or That

This is just a simple game that I start the class with in order to get the students energized, thinking, and speaking. This game is based entirely on my high school experience and serves as another way for my students to learn more about me.

2nd game: Auction game quiz

For this game, break your students into groups.

Provide each group with "X" amount of dollars (I gave each of my student groups--$1000 fake usd which I found through an online search of money templates).

Explain the concept of an auction/bidding--I had the help of my co-teacher foir this step

Their were eight different questions in my game covering different topics pertaining to american high schools. I tried to mix the difficulty of questions. Each group must buy at least one question.

Once the game begins and each team has purchased their respective teams, I read the question and give each team 15-30 seconds to answer the question. If a team answers their question incorrectly I give another teeam the chance to correctly answer. Each correct answer is worth double the value of the purchase price. The team with the most money at the end of the game wins.

Lastly I was able to find a video of my high school on youtube and showed that at the very end of a few classes where there was time left over.
