This is a classic activity designed to get students to think critically about the positive and negative points of different people.
The PowerPoint sets the scene. Tell the students to imagine they are on a sinking ship. There is a deserted island nearby. They get on the only lifeboat. There are 13 people still on the ship, but only 6 more can fit on the lifeboat. Who would you save?
A worksheet is provided to go along with the PowerPoint. I used the white board and a marker to write the students' comments about each person. I went through each person one by one and made the students give me at least 2 positive and 2 negative things about each. Afterwards, the students were asked to make their own list. It's pretty self-explanatory when you see the worksheet :)
This was successful even in my low-level 2nd grade middle school classes.
If you like this lesson, check out a similar lesson "Desert Island with Items" here:

Is this from a chapter in the book, or your own idea?

I'm using this with my first year boys at my high school and it works pretty well. It ties into an earlier lesson I did on Pros and Cons. Thanks!

This worked pretty well for me so far. I threw in a video clip of the trailer for Lost to give them a better idea of the situation.

;) This is so detailed. Thanks sooo much! I have an after-school class that's too freakin long and this should keep them busy and chatter-free.

Looks awesome. My seniors aren't taking the KSATs and have therefore checked out of school. Maybe this will inspire them.

First off, I enjoyed your ppt. Second, I did a similar activity when working in the dormitories and I was wondering if you or anyone on here might know of it.
The premise is very similar. The earth is facing Armageddon and you must choose a handful of people to continue humanity on Mars or another spacial body. Each person has pros and cons why they should be allowed on the shuttle. For instance, one woman is pregnant but she has HIV and her baby may contract the disease, another is a man is a personal trainer so he is quite fit but he was accused of rape, and there is doctor but he is 80 years old or something and might not be strong enough to make the trip.
Sound familiar to anyone? I didn't mean to thread-jack but I honestly thought the OP might know of this scenario or possibly someone else on this forum. Thanks.

For some reason I'm unable to open this in PPT on my mac. It says it's corrupt.
