Works really well for  2nd and 3rd grade as they should already know these sentence structures and it's a good excuse for them to speak English with complete confidence (You should also encourage these students to answer in full sentences such as "No, I don't listen to 2PM, Yes, I do have a brother"). 1st graders in my school are still learning these sentence structures, so it's okay if they just say "Yes, I do" or even "Yes".

This is based on the talking battleship game from www.eatyourkimchi.com but I have modified quite a lot to suit my needs in  terms of explanation and the layout of the game.

I started by clicking on the link and playing the online version of battleship so the students could get a gist of what battleship is like (they've never heard of it beforehand, but picked it up quite easily), also explaining a few key points.

Yeah, the only difference between grade 1/2 and grade 3 are the responses to the questions. I tried making the questions harder but when they became too long it ruined the layout of the game so I left it as it is.

My grade 1's recently learned how to respond to those type of questions with simple answers, but my co-teachers went through it again with them briefly. My grade 2 and 3's I assumed that they knew how to answer as they learned this during 1st grade.

With the enlarged worksheet on the board, I went through each question making sure they understood (for 1st grade) and had the co-teacher translate when needed. Just before they play you need to emphasise the fact that they must take turns and circle or cross the appropriate grid ('My grid' or 'Enemy grid'), as I found that they get a bit confused when doing this.

A solution I found was to fold the sheet in half so that on one side is the 'My ships' and on the other side is 'Enemy ships', and every turn they flip the sheets, problem solved :)

When they play, you need to constantly supervise the whole class along with the co-teacher (if possible) just to make sure they're on the right track. The students who finish first are usually the ones who didn't play the game properly.

One more thing. You might wanna get the students to draw the legend for hits as X's and misses as O's on their gameboard as they got confused at times as to what symbol was what.

the margins on the battleship's handout is awkward...is it supposed to be like that? the side got cut off a bit when i printed it out

Yeah, I had a bit of trouble trying to get everything to fit in the half page, so only a bit of the margin should be cut out. You can go ahead and try to make the worksheet smaller, but I couldn't make the fonts any smaller as the students couldn't read it. Maybe your students have better vision than mine, so do try ^^ haha

This lesson was great. Explaining how to play the game at the start of the lesson is a little difficult, as students tend to lose attention, but the PPT helped a lot, also the website demonstrating the game at the start.

Once my coteacher and I made sure the class understood, the lesson ran itself, the majority of kids played without assistance. The only kids who didn't play were the ones who don't do anything in any class, so not much could be done there.

Some finished 10-15 minutes early, in which case I gave them crosswords and word searchs to complete, which they always love!

The students and coteachers were impressed with the presentation, one student even thought it was me that invented 'Battleships'. Others just thought about the atrocious film of the same name.

Hey guys I have tweaked the game a little bit for the 3rd graders.

1.  Margin problem fixed. Now, each student gets a A4 page.
2.  Changed the Answer sentences. Talked to my CT and other ENTs and we thought it   would be better to teach the students  full sentences and then the ways in which you can give a shorter answer. Ex.:

Q: Do you have a boyfriend?
A: Yes I do have a boyfriend.

3. Changed some of the Kpop groups.
4. Added a sheet with example sentences and answers. This is useful if your CT wants to do some preparation work with the students
