CAN'T OPEN PPTX? READ HERE
« on: September 14, 2011, 12:14:50 pm »
If you use Office 2003, you won't be able to open 2007 files (pptx, docx, etc.) by default. However, by downloading and installing the following pack, you'll be able to open, edit, and save 2007 files using Office 2003.

It would be better if people didn't post pptx (or any of the other brain-dead new Microsoft formats- docx, xlsx etc.).

Number 1 reason - I can't install any software on my PC at school.

Number 2 reason - I don't want to.  If you want me to read your stuff then publish it in an accessible format.

A bit harsh?

Let's see.  Let's assume 1) Everyone can read .ppt files, 2) not everyone can read .pptx files and 3) I want my material to be read by everyone.

Which format should I use to make things very easy for the most number of people?  Hmm, .ppt.

Or conversely,

I'll release my work in a a format that many people can't use, which will lead to a stream of confusion culminating in a message posted to *every thread* about how to fix it, assuming of course that the fix is available to you and doesn't break something else.

It's up to you.

Perhaps you are unaware, but pptx. allows for features that ppt. does not. This simple download allows people to keep those features while granting accessible for power point 2003 users. If you "don't want to," download this file that's "up to you,"  but people are obviously going to continue to release their power point files in pptx. format seeing as ppt. 2003 is an 8 year old program.

I am completely aware of the fabulous and unmissable great new features in later versions of PowerPoint, but frankly they are a waste of time.  If you can not get your information across in a simple, accessible way and instead have to rely on bells and whistles to make things interesting then you should quit now.

Please tell me one feature that is not available in the older PowerPoint version that is essential, and why.

Also, please explain why PowerPoint 2003 should be discarded because it is 8 years old when it does exactly what it is supposed to do?

I dont mean to sound like a dumbass but I've not really used pcs much for powerpoints before now etc, I work at 3 schools and at one of my schools my content never works on powerpoint or word (so I have to printscreen every slide the day before and show pictures.....LONG)
Is there any way I can save my mateiral in a reduced form so it works on the more basic schools system? (i presume is 2003) where it will not play pptx - so it is the basic ppt?
I have 2007 at home so can easily change there.

Also I would like to add I can not download the files mentioned because downloading is blocked at school.

Thanks

No, you're not a dumb-ass.  It's Microsoft's fault for introducing a new, incompatible file format and then settling back to watch the confusion they have wrought.

What you need to do is use "Save As" to save in the older .ppt format.  Here's a brief tutorial:

http://www.ehow.com/how_6132497_convert-powerpoint-pptx.html

As mentioned earlier, some of the new features are not supported in the old software, so the trick is "don't use them".

Many thanks for the help guys - it has been a bit of a pain so far, I agree, it is stupid they have made them incompatible. I will spend some time this weekend making sure I always save in the basic form. Many thanks

Perhaps the new features are a waste of 'YOUR' time, but they are not a waste of time for the people who figured out how to utilize them. Just because you cannot personally see a use for the new features doesn't give you the right to belittle those who provide you with a FREE LESSON. The amount of entitlement in your messages is staggering.

If you have a problem with Microsoft about how they make their software take it up with Microsoft instead of badmouthing the people who are nice enough to provide you with free lessons.

I have no sense of entitlement.  If you offer me something I can not use then I will skip it, thanks.

On the other hand, your insistence that I should lift a finger and install some extra software, or pay for a new version because you figured out how to use some trivial new feature (congratulations, by the way) is astonishing.

Get a Mac with Keynote :)

But good link for those who didn't know about PPT and PPTX. Besides the 'bells and whistles', PPTX is more stable and functional. Also, all the fonts are sleeker and more well designed. That goes for all the new Microsoft formats. It's technology and, like everything else, you should keep everything up to date as much as possible. Plus, its' FREE. You don't need to buy a new version of Powerpoint.

Whether you use PPT or PPTX is irrelevant...but you want your lesson to look good as well as be a functional and informative lesson. 'Sell the sizzle, not the steak' applies, and the meat of your lesson will benefit from a good looking presentation (see what I did there?). There's nothing wrong with those bells and whistles, as long as they look good and deliver a good lesson. I'll be the first to say that half the stuff on Waygook is terrible, and that most of the people here could benefit from a lesson on using PPT effectively. This is a community however, and posting those PPT's online helps those who don't have experience with this kind of workflow. That's crucial with a job like this, and for many people this is their first real job out of school. No experience necessary, right?

I don't think the OP was insisting anyone do anything. Rather, he was providing a solution to a minor problem that many people don't know much about. Plus...how much effort does it take to click a button? If you're too 'holier than thou' for that, then you have some problems and should just quit now (also see what I did there?).

I see this has become the send-a-message-here-to-boost-your-message-count-and-access-the-free-downloads thread.

I have a Mac with Keynote, and I am actually having troubles opening up the .ppt and .pptx files.
Keynote works fine to save files as .ppt and to access .ppt's that I have on a flash drive.
I'm new to Mac, does anybody know what the problem is, or how I might try to fix it?

Thanks.

For what it's worth, I can open pptx files on the computer in the English room, save them, and then email them to myself.
Then, I can open them on my computer in the teacher's room. A bit tedious, but it works (don't ask me why).
I haven't tried downloading any extra software to my computer, maybe it would work, but sometimes it's easily upset. :P :'( :'

Superhaz have you heard of Prezi? it is a good alternative to powerpoint and you save and open the presentations online. You just go to www.prezi.com, create a free account, and start making prezis. The students find them really cool becuase they haven't seen anything like it before. It is worth watching the quick tutorial, but you barley have to since most of it is very self-explanatory and easy to figure out. Check out some of my prezis at:

http://prezi.com/ey5lvstggaz5/opinions/
http://prezi.com/bmgyboxd3mfn/favorite-foods/

You can download them and keep them on a flash drive too if you would rather.
