MadLibs - a story game (great for filler classes)
« on: December 05, 2011, 11:41:21 AM »
I have been using this lesson for filler classes, like today, and they have been well received.
  • Warm up their creativity by showing them a Tippex video.1
  • Brainstorm with them on the board, types of nouns, verbs, and adjectives. 2
  • I have dual monitors, where I always use one screen as the presentation mode, and the other to edit my Powerpoints as we go a long. It might be a little awkward, but turning off the screen, then asking them for keywords, inputting them in, then turning on the screen should do.
  • Read the stories. 3
  • Give them worksheets to work on themselves, and have them read the stories.
  • Time permitting, have them fill out a comic of their story!

Overall, this lesson worked well on even the lowest level classes.

This is an awesome collaboration between Waygookers who have helped tweak, warned or added materials: D_ndu, Bender0330, kronlunda, Brian C, JayBird

1 Avoid using the words: beer, soccer, new york, cool
2 Usually, when I suggest Obama and bibimbap for nouns, they start to get creative. If your teacher is cool with it, try to suggest sexy too lol.
3 I think it is very important and much funnier to get a translation from your co-teacher, to ensure the lowest level students understand and wants to suggest words for the next story.

This lesson plan looks like a lot of fun, which is perfect since all of my students are finishing up their finals.  That tippex link is hilarious! I would also recommend avoiding the word "cool," it shows a video of the bear and hunter peeing together and I'm not sure if it shows his dong or not but it shows something between his legs.http://www.waygook.org/Smileys/SoLoSMiLeYS1/shocked.gif  Which would most likely be viewed as inappropriate in class.

Other than that I definitely plan on using this lesson within the next week or so! Cheers!

Definitely check everything you write in the space before you show your students.

"Plays soccer with" seems innocent.....

Thanks guys! When I do the first story with them, there isn't really much enthusiasm until they know what's going on. It's the second story where they get really creative and start laughing.

Warning added to the main post! Thanks

Really fun lesson, thanks for posting.  It got quite a few laughs from my students and many were eager to share their stories with the class.  The hanfout had a small error though.  For the "Candy Store" story, number 5 (adjective) was missing so I just erased "tasty" and added it there.  I have attached the file.  Thanks again for a great lesson.

Yay! Thank you!

I updated the doc with your corrections.  ;D

Good stuff. Tried it out in my class and it was a hit. I also stole an idea from one of the teachers at the Chungnam English contest who incorporated comic book drawing with mad libs. Had them basically draw their story in a comic strip.

Found out most of the students weren't big on captioning/speech bubbles, so I tacked them on the wall and with just the comic drawings had them try to guess the story in each others comic.

Nice! My advanced classes finished the lesson quite early, so we shared perhaps too many stories. This would have been great for them in the end.

The timing on this couldn't be better! Thank you so much for sharing! I am planning my winter camp lesson, and the theme is 'story writing' where they go home with a story they've written at the end of the week! One of the activities on Game Day is mad libs! I can't even begin to thank you enough for this!

I just used this class for the first time today and it went over insanely well!  Even some of my more disruptive students were very involved and loved it!  Great lesson plan.

I did a mad libs lesson during summer camp. I first taught descriptive words (adjectives and adverbs). Then I gave them each a mad lib story with a paper covering all the words except the blanks where adjectives and adverbs go. Then had them fill in the words and read the completed story and draw a picture to go with it. Then I showed the rest of the class the picture and asked the rest of the class questions about it like "what Is this" "describe it (using adjectives)" etc. then had students read or paraphrase the story.

Thank you and you're welcome :) It can get a bit strange, so your super conservative co-teacher might not like it as much...beware!

Wow this thread is a bit old BUT the game is a classic! I just wanted to share some mad lib worksheets I made for my kids. I was doing them prior to the break as something light.

I got the students to work in teams (you could do as a partner activity) and they folded the paper so that they couldn't see the story itself. When they were done thinking of words, they opened the paper and filled in the blanks.

The storys are very simple but the kids come up with the most ridiculous answers haha. They had a blast! Hope you enjoy!

Thanks for making these great extra stories!

I reformatted the word document so it can be printed double sided and no folding would have to be done. I did this to save on paper when printing. Hope it is helpful to someone!
