Time to vote

Hey Waygooks,

Time to get your creative juices flowing.

Games have long been a fun way to practice or review target language for Ss.  2012 though, is a little challenging.  We all have different books, and can't simply rely on the same old PPT games that are burdensome to fill out.  So, we will be running a competition from April 1st-22nd to see who can come up with the next best thing in PPT classroom games.  Everything is up to you, just remember that your game should be editable for different lesson content i.e. in a template form.

A couple of rules;
1. No posting existing material;
2. No using elements of existing material;
3. Files must be under 30mb.

If your game requires scoring, I have posted a generic scoreboard in my games thread under "tools".

Judging of the games will be done in the form of a poll open from April 22nd-May 1st.

The top entrants will have their work set as a sticky in the multi level lessons and concepts board, and receive Featured Contributor membership.

To enter, simply post your game as a reply to this thread within the dates the competition is running.  Take some time to explain your concept, how to use the game, and how it is beneficial.

(I suggest you "reserve" your post now for when you are ready to post you material).

Any questions, please don't hesitate to ask in the thread.

Good luck, we look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Here is my masterpiece.  It is definitely the best game on waygook, and it's under 2 megabytes.

Looks like fun  :)

I hope to participate if I can find time (and an idea!) to make something.

Edit:

Nothing breakthrough here.  Just a standard bomb game.  I tried to step away from my heavy-animation style and make something lighter for the people who've been requesting something smaller.  I went for a Doraemon theme as the younger students really like him.  Aesthetic + minimal was my goal.

+ppt and pptx included
+Instructions for game play can be found on the first slide.
+26 questions
+Scoreboard created by Daejeon included.
+No fonts required to download

I made a version of America's favorite game show "Wheel of Fortune." Since the deadline is Sunday and I can only work on this at school this is a near finished beta.

There is a game show opening with the "Wheel of Fortune" chant and a condensed theme song. It goes into a timed automated explanation of the game. Install the "sf fortune wheel" font for the proper look. I'm attaching the pc version of the font, but it can be found for mac and pc with a quick google search. *The font used in the letter boxes is Franklin Gothic Medium Condensed. The letters may not fit properly hidden in their squares without this font.

Version 0.2 comes with 15 example puzzles and improved wheel randomness.

It's not the exact layout of the show, but it's fairly close. A category box pops up to give a hint at the beginning of the slide. Clicking on the consonants and vowels below the puzzle will reveal any of those letters within the puzzle automatically. There is one example phrase from grade 6, lesson 3.

The wheel spins when you click it. I created a few hidden trigger objects, and 2 moving hidden trigger objects within the wheel each with around 5 different rotational values in their cycles. So by clicking in slightly different areas of the board you should be able to get random spin values.

To create new puzzles use this template slide. I've provided at least 10 of each letter, and 20 for letters I though might be used more often. Simply drag the boxes into place over the puzzle board. All the triggers are set up to have them reveal when the proper button is pushed. I've also included some  things like ( ? . , ' & - ) which are not hidden, just add them to the puzzle if needed. When you finish laying out your puzzle I highly recommend deleting the spare boxes along the outside, it will make things run smoother.

There are 6 team and 4 team score boards at the end of the .ppt. These were experiments in using just powerpoint to make a functional scoreboard. They work, but they are not very smooth due to all of the things being triggered. Just hit the black buttons under the score box. The 10s place alternates between 0 and 5, while the 100s, and 1000s spots count from 0-9. On monday I could rig a bankrupt button to auto reduce scores to 0, but it might make them perform worse.

On Monday I should have a bit of time to reorder a couple things to allow chaining from one puzzle board to the next while maybe incorporating the scoreboard. On my mac at home the letters from the boxes were clipping out, when I get to school on Monday I'll check to see what font I used so that you don't have that issue, or I'll do a second version with mac friendly fonts. I'm also never sure if my audio files are embedded or referenced. There should be a song for the opening, and a sound effect for the spinning wheel, if they don't work for you let me know and I'll bundle the file in a .zip container.

Cheers,
Zach

Sounds like fun. Is there a limit of one entry per user?

No limit.  If you have the time, make as many as you like.

I have a concept idea so hopefully I get time to post something.

Would be awesome if you did.

Ive made two games recently, - im not sure if these can count (i have used some things (graphics / layouts) from existing games. but not too fussed ... just wanna get them out there for people to use ... feel free to download / modify / improve etc.

    1) Snakes and Ladders -

This is another game template i made, again I used some the same formatting / ideas (such as Angry Birds - Thanks to the maker of that) to make a simple to use Snakes and Ladders board game.

To move the counters (a soccer ball and a basketball) simply click once to 'pick' them up, and click again to 'drop' them.

Each square on the board has a link to another slide (the question slides). The link is situated along the top of each square (it is invisible). Click the top of a square to go to the question slides (There are 20  different slides - they may come up several times during the game - so don't be surprised if the same questions come up 3 or so times)

On the question slides, click the question box to show the answers. The heart with snake icon that appears will link you back to the main board).

When you 'drop' the balls on the relevant squares (on the main game board) - make sure to drop them near the bottom of the square (if you drop them at the top of the box, the hyper link will activate).

This game could easily be adapted to any other board game. All you need is an image of the board to replace the snakes and ladders board, move the hyperlinks to be in the right place, and you have a new game.

fairly simple, i'm no power point expert ... but both games have been well received by my kids.

Hope they help someone, somewhere.

2) Penalty Shootout Game

I have made a penalty shootout game, it is based on popular templates (Angry Birds etc) but has videos embedded in it.  This game is a massive 3.3 gigs for the full version (over 100 vids) ... so i made a slim version of it to upload for everyone else to make use of ... but even that is over 1 gig in size (40 vids) ... as a result, i can not upload it on here ... so ....

I have made a drop box account, ...

1) Go to www.dropbox.com

2) Log in using the following details
UserName/Email: waygook_user@yahoo.com
Password: waygookuser2012

3) Download all the files in the folder named 'Penalty Shootout Game'
There are 40 videos and some templates (for classes i have used the game for) - there is also a blank template in there for you to modify as you see fit.
Please be careful not to remove any files from the folder. If you do, other people will not be able to use the game.

4) Put all the files in the same folder - the videos will not play if they are not stored in the same place as the slide show its self.

5) use.

The game works in much the same was as most games on here. Two teams, pick a letter ... this will take you to a question slide - click the question to reveal the answer - if the student is incorrect, click the cross (you will return to the main screen) - if the student is correct, click the check mark. You will be taken to a penalty screen. The team choose a number, each number links to a video - if the player scores a goal, 1 point. If the player misses - 0 points. there are red and yellow cards as well .... I play with a yellow card being - 1 point for the opposing team, and the red card being minus one point for the playing team,

Ok. Here we go.

I'm not really sure if this belongs in this contest, as it's still a "PPT game that [is] burdensome to fill out."
But I thought it would be a good place to share it anyways...

Presenting, the "Where's Waldo" game.

It's really pretty much a same old same old bomb style game. Although there are no bombs. The goal is to collect Waldo's lost items. Some of waldos friends can help you but Odlaw also comes and steals your items.
There are 3 "where's waldo" scenes where a student from the team can come and try to find Waldo in the picture in 30 seconds.

There is a scoreboard with 9 teams, you can delete some if you don't need that many. Most of my classes have 7 teams. I'm not a ppt/coding genius so there may be some flaws, but I think the scoreboard works pretty well, click the item to make it appear, click again to disappear. It works as long as you don't click the 'back' button, then it resets...
There are notes throughout to help with any misunderstanding.
There are 2 rounds, with 16 questions each so you can choose to play with either 16 or 32 questions.

Anyway, enjoy. Sorry it isn't really a "new" idea, but I was half finished when this contest started... If I think up something else exciting maybe I'll post another game.
Also, lemme know if I should fix anything.

***currently I have the .pptx version, I've backsaved a .ppt version but I want to double check that everything works on my other ppt2003 computer before posting it.

Yes, I mind.
I want to win.
 :)

But what's the judging criteria?

I'm only asking because there are some games like Mario Bomb Game which are thematically brilliant but conceptually not so original. Are we looking for originality? Adaptability to various lesson aims? Games that are fun to play?

Members choice.  In my opinion a game should be all of what you mentioned plus original.

I don't mind, but you should level the playing field and exclude your ActiveX/flash powers.  :P

Fine, only if we can make the games under 50mb instead of 30!  ;D

To be honest, I've already given up.
The fact that it's gone pro combined with the fact I'm confined to the Mac version of PPT= certain defeat.

My initial production was a Twilight game but it's pretty poor.

I will probably post it anyway just for the sake of it but unless I get some decent time on my classroom computer between now and the end of April it looks a bit sad.

Next year ..... next year.... :)
