Here is a "family tree" activity I made for active, kinesthetic learners.  I downloaded a basic PPT from another website and added my own explanation of the family tree.  Target vocabulary words are: spouse, sibling(s), cousin(s), and grandparents.  For a more advanced class, there is a PPT with words like niece and nephew. 

For the activity, students get into teams of four.  They read the clues and work together as a group to organize family members' pictures into a family tree.  Some clues are not obvious; they have to think about the family relationship (for example, the clues say "Kendra is Briget's cousin."  Students have to figure out who Kendra's parents are.).  I cut and laminated each family members' picture to use again and again.  The first team to correctly build the family tree WINS!  This is a great way to get students moving and thinking.

I did a family tree lesson with my second graders last year, over the course of a couple of weeks. I focused on teaching "in-laws" and defining extended family terms. I did a review at the beginning of this year and only my high level students seemed to remember most of the vocab. I got the "Jack's Family Tree" activity from LanternFish and then used the Simpsons family tree to review the new vocab. I then played a review "Jeopardy" type game with the students.

I did a family tree lesson as well, showing the simpsons example thinking they'd love it, but meh really.

But then when I did a made up joke family they went nuts. really worked well

I love the simpsons family tree idea.  I am going to combine that with Dajeons Simpons bomb game.  Instead of using the point system, i will give donuts. 

I will pin up additions to the family tree.  Bart's son is harrypotter and his great grand mother is superwoman.

The Simpsons Family Tree is a great idea but I wonder if anyone has an idea that would interest low level high school boys. Does anyone know enough about Starcraft? haha Starcraft Family tree? haha I don't think that would work. Thanks for a starting place though.

I did the Family Tree topic with my 1st grade middle-schoolers. I thought maybe the vocabulary was a bit easy for them because they tend to be even better than the 3rd graders this year. But it went well, my co-teacher told me she really liked it.

I thought the Simpson's idea was great! So I printed out the Simpson's family tree and cut the pictures and names out and had them form the family tree after going through the Simpson's 'quiz' part. That turned out to be a really good activity for them because if they didn't have it formed right they had to listen to key phrases such as: Herb is Homer's brother. Ling is Selma's daughter... etc. etc to figure out the correct order of everyone.

This lesson was totally amazing.  Last week I did "what did you do for chuseok" and found that a lot of my students were struggling with the vocab to describe their family.  I used the ppt and game you posted in your original post.  I had to get rid of spouse as it was confusing to them but I kept siblings.  I re did the family game to use my own family and the kids loved it.  The finished really quickly but still found it challanging.  I made it into a race so they did really well.  Because I had 10 mins left I had the kids draw their own family trees. 

Thanks for the lesson plan it is a great presentation and idea!   ;D

Whoa... That's actually a really good idea!  Each race already has a "tech tree" in the User Manual (or PDF, or however it comes packaged these days) so there's even the right framework already in place.  Though... it's not quite the same shape as a family tree.  I'll post an example.  I don't have time to work on it before my class today, but I really like the concept.

I also found a "family tree" picture designed by someone over at DeviantArt for Wall-E's family tree.  It's cute and has a lot of pictures that boy students would probably recognize.  Though... I guess you posted this over a year ago so maybe you no longer have students in Korea. :P
