Yes, I find this post to be very helpful. I am a young teacher with certification for grades 7-12, but I'm now teaching elementary for the first time here in Korea. How I develop a lesson for older students (and for social studies) is very different than how your process unfolds. Seeing your thought process is very helpful, thanks!

new guy here, teaching at a girls middle school. I've only gone through one complete lesson so for, a very simple powerpoint followed by an interview activity. So far I haven't had any problems presenting the material, it's coming up with activities that's a hassle. Thought that would be the easy part, just give them something to do and take a nap. I would rephrase this topic, "Finding a Worthwhile Activity That Won't Incite a Mutiny or Cause a Classwide Coma Is Slightly More Than Extremely Frustrating."

Thank you for posting this. I'm a new teacher and this helps me with my role. Another good piece of advice I've had from an experienced teacher is that you have to remember that when a lesson fails, it's not necessarily your fault. Could just be a bad day, could be the kids are down, etc. We can only do so much, but it's up to the students to engage, too.

I do a process like this before I teach my classes and it seems to work well! I find that if I ask my co teachers for their opinion that they will give it to me.

I am an education major. I have spent more hours doing lesson plans the way my University expected than I'd like to recall. Unfortunately the format they had us write in was logical, but not practical. In yor summary you woreded basically everything they were teaching me, but in a more easy to comprehend mannor that wasn't daunted with detail. Thank you.

This has been a great help. As someone who's never taught before and now having to teach high school kids, lesson planning seems daunting. I plan to share my lessons once it becomes easier for me.

I would like to know how to gauge the students' English level and prior knowledge. The author of the post stressed using their prior knowledge. I am wondering how best to gauge their English level, if not their knowledge on other topics. Is there an assessment activity?

Thanks for sharing on how you lesson plan. This really helps a lot to see how another teacher develop their lesson plan. Have little experience teaching I have a hard time lesson planning. I'm constantly struggling on how to structure my lessons. Seeing your post gave me some idea of where to start.

Same here. I use what I learned in TEOL classes as kind of a roadmap, but the reality is, some of those roads are blocked here.

I'm lazy about lesson planning to be honest. Some days I show up and just wing it. I hope to advance my skills a bit with this website. Teaching at a middle school has shown me that I am teaching much more than English. I have to get the class together. So a simple interaction like throwing a ball back and forth with students saying each other's names helps, with no language function.

I will contribute my stuff soon... promise.

I wish I would have had a guide of this quality the first time I tried to write a lesson plan...four straight days, 7 hours of planning each = 5 mediocre lessons. Hoping to do a little better over here. Thanks for the great guide.

Wow, so much to think of when planning.
I am 4 weeks into teaching in a middle school in Daejeon, just returning from a 5 day orientation and my brain is over loaded with so much.
Thanks for this post as it does help to narrow down the planning a little more. I reccon it will take some time with practice to get it right, but grateful to read stuff on here that helps with my own process.

Thanks for your input, I hope one day I will be able to upload my own lesson plans for others to use, once I am better at it.

The thought of having to construct lesson plans that take hours to complete would drive me to drink. There must be somewhat repetitive no?

E.g Alternating between different sets of lesson plans for different grammar points?
