I put together a pretty simple PPT for a Lunar New Year activity. It's a simple intro to the 12 animal signs and has a hidden picture game and a word scramble. Best used for 1st-3rd, but I did use it with my 4th-6th and they seemed to enjoy it enough.

I used this as a precursor for an arts and crafts activity (Chinese lantern making).

Yes, the lantern craft is like the one linked above. I had them choose an animal they liked (most chose the animal of their birth year) and draw it out. They loved it.

Altogether it was a 60 minute class and they were such perfectionists with their drawings that we often ran right up to the last minute putting the lanterns together.

Helloooo all,

So we have this dead week between winter and spring break. Here's my Lunar New Year Lesson I'm doing with my 5th graders. Could work for 6th grade too. It practices past tense with all those lovely verbs in the textbook.

Here's the run-down:
1. Listen and Repeat.
2. The Slap! Game. Tape the cut-out verbs on the wall. Students make 2 lines. Teacher whispers the verb to the last person. They whisper it up the line. First student runs and grabs the verb from the wall and races back to the teacher. They must say a sentence with it to get a point.
3. Make-a-Sentence: Student teams receive mixed-up words. They have 5 minutes to make as many sentences as possible.
4. Survey: Find someone who... Students ask each other what did you do? for New Years. They write their names down on the activity picture. First ten people to get a name on every square wins a sticker. (this worksheet's having trouble uploading)
5. If you have a ton of time in your class, there is a Make-a-Lantern activity. It's really easy. All you need is colored paper and scissors, and the video from British Council online shows you how to make the lantern:

I used the lunar powerpoint and we talked about the Chinese zodiac signs.
Then I talked about family trees with the students and modelled making one on the board.
I told them not to fill in their family members names but that were going to make our "Animal Family Trees"
Their job was to figure out witch animal zodiac signs their family members belong to and fill in their family tree with the animals. It was so much fun! And they loved presenting their silly animal families :)

Charades might also be a fun way to wrap this up- I think my 3rd and 4th graders will love it!

This could be taught when New Year comes around next time about the tradditions in a selection of other countries.
Go through the PPT, elicit from students what countries they think they can see in the first picture only page.
Ask sts the different between these countries and how they celebrate in thier own country.

I'm doing a lesson in light of New Year's on Chinese Zodiac animals. I will use the "lunar new year zodiac animals" ppt made by another user, slightly modified according to the New Year, and a "make a chinese new year lantern" worksheet to make lanterns to decorate the classroom.

I will use the "zodiac sign animals" printouts I posted for the lanterns according to each student's year of birth. Since I teach 3rd-6th graders for my winter camp I will use the following years and animals:

For 3rd graders - 2002, horse
4th graders - 2001, snake
5th graders - 2000, dragon
6th graders - 1999, rabbit

After each student identifies their year/animals they will color their worksheets and then make their lanterns.
