US Presidential Election Lesson
« on: September 12, 2012, 03:15:04 pm »
Here is a lesson that I made about the upcoming US presidential election. Included are nine vocabulary words and a watered down and very basic explanation of the US presidential system. At the beginning I draw some parallels between the US and Korean government systems (of which there are many) and then explain the differences between Democrats and Republicans. There is also information about both Obama and Romney. Though I can barely stomach Mitt, I tried my best to give each candidate and party equal coverage.

There is also an attached worksheet. At the end of the lesson, the students have a short writing assignment talking about 5 things they would do if they were president. Can be funny or serious depending on what you're going for.

This will be part one of a two part lesson. The second part will be a review game which I haven't made yet. I will post that next week when I make it.

This lesson took a long time to make so I hope others out there can use it and enjoy it.

I'm at the high school level but it's still fun. I added in the 4 major third party candidates and some short TV campaign ads. Works pretty well. Thanks!

This is really well done. I think you did a good job of being neutral in the PowerPoint.

I've looked at the lesson and it's quite nice.

I'm curious as to how this is received: I remember being 100% apathetic to everything even remotely touching on politics until well after I graduated from high school, and I'm not sure if even the most brilliantly put together lesson would hold the attention of my students, especially if its about foreign politics.

Would be interested on comments how this lesson goes over!

I did this lesson for my middle school students (grade 1 & 2) and it went over well.  They were interested  in the lesson and the worksheet was good also.  My co-teachers seemed to think it was a good lesson too..

Super job high five awesome  ;D

Why do none of the graphics and images show up on the powerpoint?

Is it just my version of powerpoint? I have 2007.

Did anyone else have this problem?

Excellent lesson! Too bad I found this a  little too late (seeing as the election's technically today), but I think I might tweak it a bit to make it a post-election lesson for my high levels to discuss what happened. Maybe I'll add in a little more information about the upcoming Korean election as well.

Thanks!!

This is an amazing lesson!
I added some stuff like "who, what where when, why, and how" to make it a little more complicated, as well as campaign ads.
You did a great job and a great service to us all by giving the facts and not opinions.

This is really fabulous. Thanks for doing this! It looks like it took a while and a great job presenting the information in a fair-and-balanced way! Look forward to a review PPT from you!

I'll let you know how this goes over in my 3rd year middle school class.

I did want to make one change. On the worksheet, you have, "If I was President...." The proper way to phrase this is, "If I were President..." I just made the little change on the worksheet, but something to think about. Here's a link to an explanation of when you use "I was" and when you use "If I were."

My teacher asked me just this morning to do something about the election...by second period.  Thanks a bunch man you just saved my hide!  This is a rather good lesson and is almost spot on to my students level.  Just a couple of tweaks and I was set!

Did this lesson with both my second year and third year girls.  they were all very into the lesson, and really enjoyed looking at the pictures of Obama and Romney.  They find both of them very handsome.  Its a shame I ran out of time so i couldn't really get to the "If was president bit."
