Best Lessons on Waygook (Middle School)
« on: November 22, 2012, 02:25:04 PM »
This site is a wonderful resource with hundreds of excellent lessons.
I'd be interested to see what lessons on this site you have found to have worked best in your classes, and also take the opportunity to give recognition and thanks to the teachers who have produced some really amazing lessons. This thread is for middle school lessons (if you'd like to do something similar for different age groups, go ahead!).

In the interests of keeping it relatively tight, I'd like you to choose up to 3 lessons which you found to have worked really well.

My selection (in no particular order)
1. http://fourfootprints.com/category/esl/lesson-plans/middle-school/
I know this is a link to an outside site, however this teacher has posted all of these lessons on this site. The powerpoints are slick, the lesson plans are well-designed, and the classes are fun. My favourite is the "What happened next" lesson. Be warned, the file sizes are pretty big, and take forever to download on my school connection.

Whitespider's storybook lessons. These are great. You can edit them to last 1,2 or 3 periods. There is a nice selection of stories, and many of them the students are familiar with them, so even weaker students who struggle to understand are able to participate. These are also a great fallback in case the IT in your room fails. (I have a spare set of copies, just in case).

This is one of my favourites. It was great to see the students produce creative work. The powerpoints really guide their poem production and I found it worked really well in mixed-level classes. Top students produced great stuff, and even weaker students surprised me with their poems.

I think this is a very useful thread thanks for the leads:

Whitespider I have been a fan of for a while she has good stuff. Below are some of her works:
Creature Hunt Camp:  http://www.waygook.org/index.php/topic,40514.0.html
Detectives Camp:  http://www.waygook.org/index.php/topic,3651.0.html
Storybooks already posted by OP

Leo Fuchagami has awesome stuff as well:  http://www.waygook.org/index.php/topic,11538.0.html
You can also download his lessons from his own site.

Finally attached is a PDF file of a free book called TeachLearn by Dave Deubelbeiss I used this a lot when I first came to Korea and it saved my life.

The animal fights lesson from this site was the best thing i did all year. Nice structure (write, talk, video cycle ever 10 mins) and had freedom with words and grammar you linked to it. I upped the vocab level a bit as my school's pretty advanced but overall it was a great idea and a good lesson.

Bumping this thread to get people posting!

Personally, I find doing searches like site:waygook.org middle school "this is a great lesson" or "went really well" works in a jam.

The best lesson I've had this year was this one (see my post):

Bumping this, as I keep this page bookmarked and I'd love to know what anyone else does.

My No. 1 'go-to' lesson when I'm stuck is the 'Pig Personality Test'

I've adapted this for so many levels. Such a great one to turn to when you're stuck for something to do.

Also, planning my new summer camp, and Whitespider seems to be an angel that graced the pages of waygook for a few years. All her lessons are incredible.

I'm continuing to try and bump this page.  I love using songs in class.  Although it is important to do this only once in a while, because at some schools they might accuse you of making more of a listening lesson than a speaking lesson.  Heaven forbid!  I really like this thread:

Is there a similar thread like this for elementary? Golden
http://a-chronic-expat.tumblr.com/ for writing and photography of a chronic expat.
