A lesson about Natural Disasters with a Typhoon game.

Here is a power point I just did with my students. They seemed to enjoy it. I also showed them youtube clips of each disaster. Also, had a fill in the blank work sheet to use with it.

Thanks for the PPT. I played a battleship style game with my kids, using disasters along one axis and countries down the other.

Lesson plan looks really good. I like the worksheet idea. What grade level did you do this for? Do you think it would be to hard for middle school first grade?

rlhadley, Shannon isn't teaching in Korea anymore, so she probably won't answer (Unless she's still lurking around here somewhere?), but to answer your question, this was based on a 3rd year middle school text book lesson from a couple of years ago. I did it with First to Third year, and as long as you use appropriate language and edit if for the lower grade, they can do it without too many problems.

I changed a few things from the original post of the powerpoint and added some video clips. I threw in how things are measured, too like the Richter Scale, and the Hurricane and Tornado categories.

I planned to do the Battle Ship game, too but ran out of time.

My town in the states was just tore apart from the tornadoes.

However, the circus was somewhat nearby and they used elephants to help move a bunch of the heavy debris after the storms. Here's a clip. It might be an interesting addition to a lesson about natural disasters.

Hey!
I've been using this game to accompany my lesson this week. I teach at an all boys middle school. The older students have told me that they don't like Doraemon but they still have fun with it. The younger students sing along with the song at the beginning of the game. I would say it's a hit all in all. Thanks to the OP for taking so much time to make it!
I'll post my lesson. I got the powerpoint from this site and just changed a couple minor things.

Hello all,

I really like the work you guys did here. I changed the lesson around to start with a brief weather overview. After the overview I combined Kahikigirl's lesson with a story about a girl who saved her family from a tsunami. At the end there is a small review game. I can't claim originality because my friend came up with the game and found the story.

I'm definitely "stealing" the weather battleship game for my after school class. I've been trying to figure out some game that'll be on the theme of natural disasters (in wake of the typhoons), but too many of them were writing and not speaking. This is great; thanks achin87!

I did this last semester with my second grade middle schoolers, but my KT liked it so much that we ended up doing it with the 1st and 3rd graders too.

There is a PPT running through all sorts of extreme weather - there are several video clips as well to help demonstrate.

There is a slide asking how many of the kinds of weather I have been in - the students were fascinated at that...one of them called me "Girl Hulk."

Then there is a typhoon game (too perfect not to use). There are a couple of questions in the game pertaining to the slide in the other PPT about how many of them I have been in so please remember to change them around or you will confuse your students.
