Here's my powerpoint for Lesson 4.
To play the horse race game: each team has a horse taped up on the board in a line. The board is divided into 9 sections.
I have 9 envelopes, each with a sentence cut up into individual words. The teams have to race to correctly write the sentence (spelling counts), then have one student show me their sentence.
When a team has a sentence written correctly, their horse moves ahead one section. The first team to have all sentences correctly written is the winner. They go nuts for this game.
I accidentally deleted my sheet with the sentences, but they are all variations of the sentences we reviewed in the lesson. Off the top of my head, I remember:

This is the pool where I learned to swim.
March is when we start school.
I think Minsu is very cute.
December 25th is the day we celebrate Christmas.
Why do you say so?
USA is the country where I was born.
I think the KIA Tigers will win.

Let me know if it is still confusing!

Karpouzi I took your lesson and just changed and added a bit. I initially just started with soccer but you explained some of the vocab really well and I used that. Thank you for the lesson.

I will be doing this in class and then have a discussion with them about all the soccer teams seeing as they really love soccer. I'm at an all boys school so this lesson will go down really well with them. Also at the end I will let them write down their own teams and compare them. For the second lesson next week I'm planning on doing "world cup" exercise on p63, i will be making a ppt with all the teams and they have to basically choose which teams win and eventually win the world cup.

Hey,

I took your powerpoint and kept the speech bubbles/celebrities. But, instead of having a bubble pop up after the, "what makes you say so?" I left it blank so that the girls (I teach all girls) will have to (as a class) say why they think someone would say that. Ie: I think it might rain today. What makes you say so? They could say...there are clouds, I felt a raindrop, people have umbrellas etc...that way I can check better for comprehension of the sentences.

Then, I added a whole section on the Olympics/World Cup bids and asked questions about winners/losers/bidders for both games. Ie, who should win? What makes you say so? The last slide about Korea hosting Olympics, may do in pairs/groups depending on time with short presentations, or orally as a class, depending on each class. Everything else before last slide, I will do as a class.

Enjoy!

i love doing speech bubbles and the kids absolutely go crazy when their favorite idol is on the screen. for this lesson i also threw in a bunch of sports stars (Kim Yuna, Park Jisan, Park Taehwan) to keep with the theme

i'm really excited about this horse race game - i think my kids will really like it as they're super competitive.

THANKS!!
~ enjoy ~ *^^* ~

I used animal videos to practice the "Who do you think will win?" part. I wrote some vocab on the board (biggest, fastest, biggest horns, stronger, etc.) and gave students a very simple worksheet to fill in as we go along. I'd start with the first slide "Bear vs puma" and ask random students who they think would win. They had to fill in the whole worksheet, discussing the attributes of the animals as we went along. At the end, I played a gambling game where every student had $10 and they had to bet on the animals before I showed the clip. They went wild for it. Hope it helps.

Sorry, some questions about the game.

So there are nine envelopes, each with one sentence cut up?

If so, how can one team write all the sentences, if the envelopes are distributed between all the teams, so no one team will have all the sentences?

sorry if that is a dumb question!

This lesson looks great. How do you plan to get the class to participate or not have the same students asking all the questions? Does this lesson take the whole 45 minutes?

I incorporated a couple of the other grammar points from the book and tacked the horse race game on the end (great idea, by the way). I have to do each unit for 2 weeks, and this is week one. I'll post what I do the following week if I come up with anything good. The first few slides are review from the last week's lesson, so you may want to delete those.

Hey all, here is a prezi that I made for this lesson. It focuses on practicing giving opinions, "who will win?" "I think..." "Why do you think that?" "Because...." etc. The two animal vids I had to download and upload to prezi, hope they work, if they don't I included the links so that you can find the vids. I am going to add vocabulary introduction to the prezi here in a bit. Enjoy :)

Here is the link ---> MS 3 Lesson 4 prezi

It's not! I have the same question. Would an envelope be placed on each table, and every team would have to go to each table to unscramble a sentence? I have 42 students per class, so that'd be way too chaotic for me...

Maybe each team can have all of the sentences but instead of being cut into words they'd be cut into phrases? i.e., (USA is the country) (where I was born.) (I think the KIA Tigers) (will win.) etc.

I'm a little confused as well, I'm thinking that the author meant that each team gets 9 envelopes? So if you had 3 teams, there would be 27 envelopes. Each team can then advance on their own based on how fast they go through each envelope. Lemme know if thats what you meant! It sounds fun, but I usually average 8 teams of 5 per class so I'd have to make 56 envelopes...:(

You totally saved my bacon this morning with this lesson plan. THANK YOU!  ;D

I've made a condensed edited version of the worksheet you made, hope you don't mind. I did the betting part on the board in teams so I took that off the sheet. I then manage to fit the rest of the writing part in two columns so you only have to print one sheet per student. :)

Thanks again.

heres my prezie for this.

http://prezi.com/1nxzef6g5u0l/soccer-the-worlds-most-popular-sport/

followed by a game of taboo. i get the students into teams. then one member from each team must stand at the front facing away from the board. ill write an activity or sport on the board and the other students must describe what it is the ones at the front without saying the actual word written. the one who guesses gets a point for their team.

Here's my contribution. I focused more on giving Opinions and Reason. I added some practice pictures and a little Soccer themed balloon debate at the end of the lesson.

I'll probibly try to squeeze in one of the listen and talk acivities from the book. Tell me what you think.

I think you guys are really going to love this.... I just took about three hours making a video to go along with this lesson. I'm using it for the second class on this lesson.  It kind of has a similar dialogue to what you would use for p.63 and then moves on to other school life things using the key phrases.  I've also made a gap fill worksheet that they can fill in the words while watching the video.  I laugh every time I watch it and I'm sure you and your kids will as well.

*Edit: 2014!!! For those of you who would like to use my video this year, xtranormal is no longer working. Therefore, you can access my video on YouTube by clicking the link below. Hope you all enjoy it!
