The Memory Game
« on: April 26, 2013, 02:52:52 PM »
Here is a different sort of powerpoint game. It's all about memory -- an idea featured in another uploaded quiz. The students look at a picture for 25 seconds and then answer a question about that picture. Some of them are quite difficult, but since this activity stresses visual cues it should even out the language differences among higher and lower students.

This is a zipped file that contains an MP3 of light concentration aiding music that should play throughout the ppt. Please let me know what you think and how well this works in your classes!

Thank you!
I tried this with my classes last week. It worked amazingly! Students loved it.
I got the whole class to work in teams and it team had a small board to write down the answer.

I couldn't believe it but the kids actually shutup.  This is the only lesson I've ever had where I never had to quiet the children or was even close to doing it.  They were unbelievably calm!

I've played it only with my more advanced students since there is a higher verbal load on some of the questions. I'm middle school, but I imagine that this game would work with high school or late elementary.

And indeed while playing this game my students have been the quietest they've ever been. I get really calm focusing on the music as well!

Glad you all have enjoyed it!

Brilliant! I've just downloaded the second version - thank you! I used the first version in my small school - 3 mixed middle school grades - and they loved it! So much quiet - then the fun of the question reveal and the buzz of discussion. It was a great lesson - thank you, OP!

This is an amazing idea. I had to add a little bit of color and get rid of the 'lose points' part because I know my students sometimes lose tempers over that. Even with 'steal points' they start cursing and fighting with other teams.. well we'll see how this goes. Thanks so much OP!

For those of you who have used this, how long did it take? Not sure if I need to prep some additional activities or whether this will be enough for the whole period.

They are only looking at pictures for about 11 minutes. Maybe double that time to have the students debate and write the answers on their whiteboards. Then there is deliberation about what letter to pick next. And some time to initially explain the game. I'd say that it always takes at least 30 minutes, but probably usually longer. There have been a few times where I haven't finished the game in the full 45 minutes, but I have a lot of banter when I play these sorts of games. If your students are like mine though (and others' from the sound of it) they will fall into a pattern of being silent for the 25 seconds of picture glimpsing. Which is amazing!

It's always good to have a back-up, but you probably don't need much to pad this material.

Many thanks to the original creator. Here is my own version, complete with all new visuals. Enjoy.

I'm not going to lie. I downloaded this ten minutes before class. I was working on my summer school and lost track of time.  My opinion?

THEBOMB.COM<----not a real link.

I didn't get all the way through, because I had some front work to take care of.  But this easily took up thirty minutes.  To the maker good job. No. GREAT JOB.
