Go Fish Game-- How do you spell ...?
« on: March 08, 2011, 03:32:41 PM »
This year I'm determined to get my students to stop saying "Teacher! Pizza spelling?!?" or "Teacher! Pizza what spelling?!" It's amazing that even after I correct them time and time again, they keep making the same mistakes.

I made a power point introducing the phrase "How do you spell ... ?"

After explaining the phrase, students will play Go Fish. There's a PPT explaining the game and a word doc where you can print the Go Fish cards. I chose weather words for the cards, but you can edit it to make the questions appropriate for whatever lesson you're covering.

This game is perfect for my second and third graders. Their spelling is unfortunately very bad. Thanks!

Thank you so much for posting this activity.  It was a great activity!  I used this in my extra class and they loved it.  Even though class finished, some of my students wanted me to quiz them.  Thanks again, great idea!

Just wanted to add I also think this is a great idea. Thanks for making the card template editable. If I make another deck, I will edit my post and add it.

It's a bit below my high schoolers' level, but that's actually JUST what I was looking for, during post-exam week.  This is perfect!  It still gives them English practice, but it's not so difficult that they'll completely resist playing when their brains are fried and in summer mode.  They really enjoyed it in the first two classes I taught today.  Thanks so much for posting your ideas and materials.  I left UNO at home accidentally, so this game was a class-saver!

Thanks for the idea!

I ended up making some more difficult cards for my students (minimal pairs, like fan and pan, sheep and ship). It was a huge hit with almost every one of my classes! Practicing the words beforehand was fun, too (ask the students to say sheep, ship, sip 3x fast :-)

jazzychica, I love your cards! I'm going to use this in my after school class today.

I made another "game" to go along with your words (pan, fan, van, sheep, ship, etc). In my CELTA class this activity was called running dictation, but I've renamed it runners and writers. Here's the gist. I tape a sheet with 10 sentences to the wall in the back of the classroom. The students work in pairs. One student is the secretary and the other student is the "runner" (I tell my students to WALK quickly). The runner has to go to the back of the classroom, read a sentence, come back and tell the secretary the sentence. The secretary writes down the sentence. The first pair to finish and have all correct spelling wins. My students have loved this activity in the past.
