How long to plan a lesson?
« on: August 05, 2013, 12:25:44 pm »
I'm just wondering how long it takes other people to plan an after school lesson?
I'm in my first year contract, but it seems to take me forever to come up with a suitable lesson and structure (which may or may not work anyways).

Any advice/tips?

Depends on too many things. When I was an undergrad in my education department, I often heard, "Teaching is an artform. It'll take you 3 years to get into the swing of it."

I worked taught in programs at schools and community centers for 2 years - 1 year as an undergrad and 1 year after. I've been doing this job in Korea for a while now, too.

Generally, an hour lesson plan takes me about 20-30 minutes to conceive and plan out - if it's original material or not. Afterwards, some time is thrown in for reviewing and revisions. Then I have to make materials which can range from another 20 minutes to 1 full hour.

If it's a lesson from our text book then the whole ordeal takes me 15 minutes - since I've more than likely done the lesson before, have old resources, or have done something VERY similar.

The more experience you have, the quicker and easier it will be to come up with and execute lesson plans.

I think is more based on where and what you are teaching.  I teach at a hagwon, and we have 2 minutes between classes, and we work for about 7 hours straight no breaks.  So either you have to spend your entire morning making plans before work, or learn your schools system for things, and reuse a few homemade ideas with different classes when you have time.  The same writing exercise can be useful for elementary through highly level middle school, as long as it only requires students to write to their ability.

If you have to make lesson plans, I would make a lesson plan skeleton and just have it pre-made so you can fill it out quicker. That should save you about 5-10 minutes filling it out.
