The Fox by Ylvis
« on: September 10, 2013, 11:03:39 AM »
If you haven't heard 'The Fox' yet, you should check it out :D I edited the video and song to end after the 2nd chorus, as the rest of the song would just be boring. My co-teacher translated the lyrics into Korean. Should accompany animal lessons pretty well, and just be downright fun :)

Here's the original:

Have fun!

My students have amazingly come up with their own version

Haha, I will never bring this song to class for JUST THAT REASON.

The guy is from Norway and this song is purposefully trying to sound like expletives. I would urge caution if you have students that really like to say "wtf" behind your back when they think you can't hear them.

I'm actually seeing things move in the opposite direction. My usual "Wtf"-ers have actually cleaned things up and just yell "What the fox say?" instead. The song was going to catch on whether I endorsed it or not but the side effect ended up making some of the more outspoken students more acceptable by sheer accident

Hey, whaddaya know? I just made a bomb game for this song. If the kids like it, by all means use their interest to get them to practise their English. I've test-driven it on middle school 1st graders. It should be fun with 5-6th elementary school kiddies.

I'm planning on working this into a lesson on onomatopoeia. Thanks for the materials!

Nice! Thanks for the game. I didn't get to use this song when I wanted to as I had an accident during Chuseok that put me in the hospital for 2 weeks, so it's good to see feedback and opinions on it. My kids know it too despite me not showing them. SNL Korea did a parody, as did this group, which gets really funny near the end

The instrumental version of the song was released recently, so I edited to the same length as before, as well as put it in the video with the subtitles.

I guess I should say I changed my tune seeing as how every kid seems addicted to this song in my grade 6 classes. When in Rome.

I am going with the Fox bomb game today. Hopefully they will appreciate it as it is the Song of the Moment and they will NOT stop humming it.

I made a gap fill worksheet for this song. It was really easy for my high school girls, so I think it should work for middle school and maybe upper elementary, too.

Here's another worksheet I found online. It was good for my elementary kids.

I wrote and recorded a parody of sorts with a good friend of mine who sings. Unfortunately her English pronunciation is sketchy so it can be hard to understand here and there. I threw Korean subtitles onto the Youtube copy but there's a link to the English lyrics on SoundCloud. This can be used for a lesson about various greetings as a sort of bonus toward the end of class, I think. I'm the "fox."

Clearly I am a bit slow as I was only introduced to this song on Saturday. But wow...my life is now a brighter place. No sarcasm, I cannot get enough of this song! I just did this class with my 2nd grade middle schoolers and they loved it. I used one of the hand outs and then we played a speed matching game. I printed and laminated the animals mentioned, and their sounds. I stuck the animals on the board and the students had to match the sounds to the animals. Fastest time wins.

I have attached the pictures if you want to play the game with your class, but have not attached the animal sounds words because my computer was being a little b**** this morning :-[

I did this song with an onomatopoeia lesson (search the site for it, i used someone else's powerpoint) and did a lyric fill, onomatopoeias, then I had the students watch and listen to some videos on youtube of a fox in real life, and then they had to make up an onomatopoeia in English for the fox's sound!  It was a good quick little way to have them use the English alphabet and manipulate it to make their own sound.

I started off by having them make the sound in English and Korean but quickly noticed they were prone to totally avoid the English.  So with the rest of the classes I said only English.  Candy if you make the sound for class or write it on the board!

Thank you for the template!  My kids love this song, so I used your game to play a BEPA review game.

Just a heads up though, I had one 5th grade student pull me aside today.  He told me the game was fun, but that he hasn't slept well since we played the game Tuesday because he is afraid of the horse.  I haven't changed it because I won't be using the game with their grade again, but just wanted to share.  Other than him, the rest of my students loved the game!

If the horse is too scary, switch out the image for a less scary one, like this:

I made this PPT to go along with the worksheet posted above by mrpopo.

The kids really liked the cute pictures. I had them repeat all the phrases and explain what each means in Korean to my co-teacher.

For your high level students, here is a short play based on Grimm's fairytale The Fox and The Horse. My kids performed this for the school festival and included a dance to Ylvis' song The Fox. If you have a small winter camp with high level students, this play might be a good activity for you.

PDF with Korean translation, to be illustrated and used in making a video. Did this during my elementary "Animals" winter camp as a warm-up activity (15 minutes each morning).

Here's a link to the video we made:
