Hey everyone,

I need your insight: Whenever I'm making a power point or game I like add pop culture references in them. I notice that I lean heavily on things that my male students know and like such as Iron Man, the Hulk, Minecraft, and Harry Potter. While these things may be considered unisex, I want more pop culture icons that are aimed at young ladies...but I have no idea what appeals to a 6th grade Korean girl.

Yeah yeah, I know K-Pop would be an easy out, but I want something that's known outside of Korea.

Have any ideas?

My middle school girls aren't really into American pop stars, but they go for all of those characters, or any other cutesy pictures.

I suggest asking your grade 6 girls themselves if they know anything pop culture outside of Korea.

My friend teaches an all girls high school, and they expressed they like Justin Bieber. So who knows, just ask them first. Ask about if they have any favorite American actors, actresses, singers, groups, they know of.

But some ideas:

KPOP stuff (of course, but like you said, you wna go outside that) so, Justin Bieber, One Direction, High School Musical

I'll also take pictures of female astronauts / athletes / scientists and just give them generic names like, "Tina" or "Kate"; those names are easy to remember and they'll associate them with the jobs.

I'll also use women from Korean History like Yu Gwan Sun -- or people from history that they might know already like Joan of Arc or Amelia Earhart, if they DON'T know who that is, then it takes like, 2 minutes to explain it and they get a nice little factoid out of it.

I do my best to present female characters that are more than just "pretty"; I feel like they receive enough of that kind of programming.

Yi So Yeon is a female Korean astronaut that all the students should know, and a pretty good role model to boot.

Kim Yuna is another one, although she's more of a celebrity now (I think she was the highest paid Korean advertisement woman for a few years), she's still a good one to show how hard work pays off. Plus, you can find some videos of her speaking English, which might make students want to emulate her.

Along the line of western women, I find that all of my students know Helen Keller and Marie Curie.

Hello,
My daughter is in the 6th grade and she is a huge Selena Gomez fan. I know she is huge in North America for that age group. There is also Justin Beiber. Taylor Swift etc
