Header - Updated topics problem
« on: March 21, 2011, 04:13:46 pm »
I use Opera browser and the header isn't working. The blue area is the same size as before, while there are more updated topics. This makes the updated topics overlap other things, such as the forum sections or people's posts.

i get the same problem with IE 8. Not as bad as the above example.
Firefox has never had any problems... but right this minute there are 3x more 'MOST RECENTLY UPDATED TOPICS:' than before.

Could you clear you browser's cache? close your browser, and then visit again?

I'm thinking your browser is using the old CSS.

Ah, working now (ugly brown theme and all). I don't know why since I didn't clear the cache or do anything.

Someone has been making updates to the theme and layout of Waygook... don't stress the appearance guys... it'll be sorted soon enough. HTML formatting isn't easy, and from what I've done of it in the past, it can be a nightmare to get things just so.

Actually, if it were just a HTML issue, then it's no biggie, but the templating scheme I created got garbled because of multiple edits using the software's own editing tools (so stupid if you ask me).  What's worse is that I didn't make a backup of the template I created, so I'm going to have to make a new one, meaning you guys will have to live with the ugly colours for a bit.

But c'mon.... 50 most recent topics :)   You got to give me that.

LOL @ Arsalan! Yes, it is very impressive! I was most impressed when I looked at the site this morning.

Is the templating scheme not using HTML formatting? I know what you mean about having a scheme garbled when you re-edit as I've done a fair bit in the past. I'm not overly proficient in what to do now days as I've not formatted in over a year.

The colors don't really bother me too much... granted they aren't pretty, but then, someone else might really like them.

I wish you luck when it comes to writing the new scheme up. And hey, don't go kicking yourself for not saving the old one... it happens. I've seen some real kickass formats go down the drain when someone makes 1 change because they forgot to save the original all too many times.

Keep up the great work!

I like the current way better. I don't care much for the yellow/brownish color, but it is a lot easier to use and I can scroll through the updates. Maybe less snazzy, but a lot cleaner and professional, I'd say!  :D

My vote:  Change the color (if you can) but keep the style!

I'm indifferent about the brown colour, but blue on brown is hard to read, black on brown is easier. The new header is amazing! and the other features are neat too. Thank you!

To be fair, the current (blue 'n' brown dirt) template is good in my mind apart from the colours. Thinking for a moment, the brown could easily be replaced with photos filtered down to a greyscale-alike palette between navy blue and pale blue (or black to navy blue) which'd finally put all those header pics amassed to use. Naturally, the text colours would have to be changed to match such a scheme (white or black depending on luminosity differences), but I think the present template has the proportions perfect.

Mockup image to demonstrate attached. Image is one of mine of Daejeon. It doesn't reduce in colours well (its an autumn shot) but its all I had access to.

It's functional.  I'm happy.  If you can make it pretty, that's just a nice bonus.  Thank you!  :)

Hey Paul,

That actually looks rather nice!  Although the issue with larger images loading on average of 80k to 100k times a day is the amount of extra bandwidth it consumes.  That was the issue with one of the very first templates (although not the same level of traffic).

I can implement something along those lines, but I need to make upgrades to the service purchased by the site.

Believe it or not, we have nearly 2TB of bandwidth allotted per month, and we always reach near the limit, with a few times actually having gone over it.  So an extra 50Kb image (it would likely end up being bigger, but I'm being conservative) times 100,000, times 30 = 150  GB of bandwidth.  Crazy stuff!

We can do it though, just not massive images, cause the 150GB will turn into TBs.

I'm going to switch the colours a bit first, and get rid of the funky colours. :)   After having backed up the template! LOL. j/k.  The templates are a mixture of PHP and HTML, and of course CSS style sheets, but the main index of the other one just turned into a heap of trash.  I typically have no issues as I SSH into the server, and do my work that way, but SMF has implemented the worst possible solution for editing a template, and I had thought of just doing some quick edits....  Horrible.  Just horrible.

Can you take a look at how signatures are displayed?  Right now, all signatures show up off to the right of the post itself instead of under it. Thanks!

agreed, it's not major, but it's a bit confusing.

Why are people talking about photos or pictures in the header. I have never seen such things. Personally, I think that if it would use more bandwidth unneccessarily, rather skip it. I love this site!
