Halloween Cartoon - The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
« on: October 18, 2013, 04:28:26 PM »
This is the classic Disney Halloween cartoon in Korean. The vocabulary is quite difficult for showing the English version.  I originally intended to show the English version with subtitles, but I have not been able to find any subtitles for it. With this Korean version, the students can still get a better sense for the tradition of Halloween, and the songs sound quite good with Korean lyrics.

It's 30 minutes which allows for a nice 10-15 minute intro or other short Halloween related activity before watching the film.

Here it is...

Since today is my slow day I whipped up this PPT about the Headless Horseman which should make a nice intro for the movie. I did some checking and the church from the story is real. The horseman is supposed to *secretly* be buried there. As was the bridge but it's since been torn down.

I took a few small liberties with the fact in the PPT. But it does make the story much better so I doubt the kids will care. And I was able to scare up actual pictures of the real church and cemetery from the story. Turns out Washington Irving himself is buried in the same place as the Horseman.  8)

Just a little worksheet I had my students do while they watched  to keep them attentive.

This is great! My third graders are taking their final exams next week (for some ungodly reason) and after that it's time to throw away their books and put on the dancing monkey routine. This will be a good lesson that serves as a call-back to the Halloween holiday. Thanks a bunch for finding this Yeti, for making the PPT Hoosier_Jedi, and making a worksheet JCMccullough.

Thank you so much for this! I had no idea what to do for Halloween, and this should be perfect. Thanks to you three for putting in the time and making/finding all these things. I really appreciate it!   :azn:

Just tailored this a little to suit my low-levelers and added vocab review...

Thanks O.P.

Oh man thank you so much everyone! I was wanting to do something for Halloween because it's my favorite, but my school is so book based I never get in lessons like this. Thankfully (I guess) I have developed bronchitis & I can't talk. This will be a perfect 5th & 6th grade lesson. You saved my bacon this week!

Thank you so much. I've already created a Halloween powerpoint presentation, but I'll definitely use this for next week. The legend of Sleepy Hollow is great for my all boys classes.

How many of you work with highschoolers? I'd like to use this, but I'm a little worried they're too old for the simple storyline.

The vocabulary is actually really advanced. I don't think they'll get bored with it if you use the worksheets and ppts. :)

Even without Korean subtitles, it's pretty possible to follow the story with just the images and tone.  I think I'll do my best to run it without the Korean version.

What's up with the link to this movie?

Did anyone by chance save it off youtube?

I was planning on doing this lesson. Luckily I checked the link last night and had time to put something else together quickly. This is a PPT I took from this website and altered it a bit. At the end, there is a link to a Simpsons Halloween Special with Korean subs. It's a bit quick for the kids to read, but I had to come up with something fast and they are still enjoying it. The PPT should take about 20 minutes to get through and the video is about 20 minutes!

Edit: There is a link in the PPT to the Domo video attached. If you want to keep the link in the PPT, you need to download the video and keep it in the same folder as the PPT itself. Also, at the end of the first scary story in the Simpsons vid (when the house implodes), Bart says, "Bitchin'!" but I don't think it translates into a bad word in Korean because my kids didn't gasp or laugh or anything. Finally, this was made for grades 2~6. If you're teaching middle or high school, you may want to pick different Halloween costumes - the ones I picked are of children who are quite young.

I ran the Headless Horseman lesson with my low-level mixed first grade high schoolers first period, to mixed results.  They understood the gist of the story, but for the most part, they seemed pretty bored.  They are rather low-level, though, so I don't know if my classes are a good frame of reference for any of yours.  My co-teacher also thought the video was too long.
