6 Letter Words Game
« on: December 05, 2013, 08:26:09 am »
Hello Fellow Waygookers,

Haha, anyways, I just literally came up with a game and I thought I would share it since I have been taking other people's fantastic games as my own, especially Funglish, Scattergories, and a few bomb games last year. Now it is my time to return the favor, and this game requires no PPT. I am pretty sure that there are variations of this game everywhere, but I tried to make it interesting for my students.

WARNING: I have yet to try this game.

What you will need:
- A six sided die
- A white board or sheet of paper for each team
- White board markers and erasers or pencils and erasers

I call this game "The 6 Letter Words Game" and if anyone can come up with a better name, that might be cool.

How to play:
1. The teacher writes a six letter word on the board.
     Example: D R A G O N

2. Each team writes the word vertically on their white boards.

3. Then in their team, they think of a word for each letter.
     Example:
Dinner
Random
Armpit
Ghosts
Onions
Nation

4. Teams receive points based on what they come up with. I haven't tried it yet, but here is what I am thinking for a point system:
Noun = 1 point
Verb = 2 points
Adjective = 3 points
Name = 0.5 points
Letters Q, V, X, and Z each time used = 1 point

Note: I am thinking doubling the points would be easier than worrying about a half point all the time, especially if you are using slashes to count points.

5. The team that has the most points that round can roll the dice. The number that they roll corresponds with their new words, so for example if they roll a 4 with the die, they would use the G word, or in this case, from my example above, the whole class would use GHOSTS and repeat the process.

I will try this out next week as I have already been a good teacher and finished all my prep for this week. If you use it, let me know what you think. I am thinking a similar point system on Sattergories might be nice as my current point system is fairly bland.

Did you ever end up playing this? If so, what age and how did it go?

I've actually played this game two years ago. Instead of awarding points to nouns, adjs, adv, and verbs, I asked them to come up with the longest word that they know per letter and each letter was awarded one point. Spelling counts so a misspelled word equals to no points. Name was no accepted in my case.

Wow, I forgot about this posting, but I have played this several times in several different ways, and other than my apathetic second grade high school students who wouldn't wake up if there was a naked girl walking past them, the game went very well. It works a lot better with middle school students who know some vocabulary.

Thanks for the fantastic idea, I often do scattegories but the students will probably appreciate the change. I whipped up a quick PPT for it, which I will attach. I plan on giving the groups 2 minutes per round.

Hey! Thanks for that! I will try it with my high schoolers today. I think for them, the length of the word is good, and I will make the rule that they have to spell the words correctly, although they love to cheat with their phones. I am not sure how they get their phones, but they do.

Yeah I made them spell the words correctly as well, led to some arguments!! Fortunately my school takes their phones in the morning so I don't have that issue.

HOLY CRAP! this game worked out surprisingly well!!  ;D ;D ;D all my classes loved it. all levels~~

THANK YOU SO MUCH~!

only down side, all the adding of the points. (i hate math haha)
so i just calculated each words' point for them and then had the girls add up their score and tell me their total.

i'm at an all girls high school, and i did this game with the 1st and 2nd year girls.

with my 1st year girls, i let them look at their official school vocab list for a little bit (their level is a bit low)
my second year girls are better, so i didn't let them look at any dictionaries.

and for both 1st and 2nd year girls, if they misspelled the word, or not the right topic, then no points.

i changed the format a little bit for my girls

also in my version, for the cities in korea slide, i skipped that one because you can spelled romanized korean words so differently, and i didn't have the energy to argue~)

Thanks for this, with Chuseok next week I need a filler lesson to get all my classes back on the same schedule!  This is perfect!

One thing you can do to keep the total points simple is to ask the students to add up the points after you checked to see that the words are spelled correctly and are actually words, and then award points based on the number of teams. For example, if you have four teams, the team with the highest points gets four points, second highest gets three points, third highest gets two points, and the team with the lowest points get one point. That way there isn't tons of math from round to round. It got annoying after going past 100 points, so I modified it that way.

Yeah the constant maths kinda sucks, I go around and give the totals for each word then make the teams add up the totals. I also have my co teacher help out to cut down the time. In terms of the totals on the board I just ask the kids what they are, they can add it up really fast and are honest. I also hate maths so these tactics cut all the actual maths (except counting) out.

Played this with my middle schoolers today. They loved it! The loved it so much that they stayed late after the bell just to finish the round. I was also able to give a short lesson on compound words.

Awesome idea for a game.

^ plus one! Thanks, needed a quick idea for an easy game and this definitely did the trick. I let some of the lower level classes use their books to find words. I don't think I've ever seen them looking through their books so thoroughly!

Thank you so much for this game idea!!  I have made quite a few modifications, but this is a great no brainer game and can be played for an entire class.

I base the points on word length and spelling.
If the word is spelled correctly it breaks down like this.

3-6 letter word: 1 point
7-9 letters: 2 points
>9 letters: 3 points

This cuts down on all the math require by the original point structure.  I also applied a scatergories-esc aspect to the game as well.

The first round is a free round, they may write any word they like from the six letter word's root letters.  The subsequent rounds have topics.  Such as all words must be foods, or jobs, or base-form verbs.  You can be creative.

Anyway, great game, love its simplicity, thanks.

Oh, I like those simplified points. That makes it a lot easier.
