I have to teach the portion in the textbook about making a medal for an important family member. Does anyone have a suggestion? At the moment, I'm having students cut out and color paper medals and they will write a note to the family member in the middle.

Same word search WS as above, but put two on a sheet. main focus was on "is it okay if..." . chicken game can be really fun or really awkward depending on the class you have. some kids will be shy.

*** i recently made some modifications to my chicken game from ericav and her game below. because students sometimes don't like to do the action - the point system is a good idea. if they do the action, there team gets a point, if they don't, then the game moves on.

lastly, i forgot to mention - ive seen many ways to elicit the "sure" or "no, you're not allowed to do that" - I like using dice. 1,3,5 = sure and 2,4,6 = no, you're not allowed to do that. makes it fun by a game of chance. enjoy.

Simple PPT which also introduces some "Is it okay.." questions from the word search that's been posted.

EDIT: I just realized I posted almost the exact same game as mirokii. Mine has slightly different rules. I tried to encourage more "yes" answers cuz my kids can be a bit apathetic.  I like mirokii's idea of fill in the blank for the slides. I will have to change mine. Thanks!

I was gonna use the chicken game too! Really fun!

In the past I have cut out Yes/No answers on strips of paper (stacked it so there are more Yes answers than no ^^ )

Any ideas for an activity/ game involving "I can't stand it? / Calm down!"

Hi everyone!
I made a Dialog Train PPT game for the SPEAK lesson. I have the students get in times and line up. The first student starts the dialog with the second person in line and then when they finish the dialog the second person turns to the next person in line and does the dialog...and it continues down the line. When all the students have done the dialog in their team line, everyone raises their hand and that team gets one point!
I got some of the graphics from other users' ppts cause they just fit so perfect^^
ENJOY!!

I have to teach this lesson in 2 parts

PART 1:

Teach students the phrase "What's up"
Go over the key language

A dialogue practice

Is it okay Wordsearch (downloaded from poster above)

B dialogue practice

Students write answer to question "What is something you can't stand?"
e.g. "I can't stand it when people talk during a movie." then share with their partners.

PART 2:
Review "What's Up"
Play the Chicken Game

@Tori-Bird

I am just curious, how long does it normally take for you to get through all the slides? Also is it easier to have all the teams go at once, or if you  have one team go at a time and use a timer? Just curious if you have issues with students cheating.

I have an open class coming up and I need to use this chapter for it.

This is a PPT to introduce the key expressions.  The similar expressions are from the teacher's manual.  The PPT is loosely themed around "The Heirs," a popular drama from last winter.

Normally it takes me about 15 minutes to get through the game because of how long it make take to divide up the teams and explain the game. You may want to delete a few slides to make it shorter. I have the students practice the dialog and then have all the teams start at the same exact time (it's meant to be a race^^). I only divide the class into two or three teams so it's easier for me and the coteacher to monitor the students (make sure they say the whole dialog) AND I tell them if I hear them slurring their words that I take time from their team.
Hope this helps!!

I spend two periods per lesson and I'm only in charge of covering the Speaking and Real Life Scene sections of the textbook. Here is the second part for lesson 4. It includes a short review and two activities. In the first activity, the students will watch the Real Life Scene video without subtitles twice. I pair the students up and give them an envelope with the sentence strips from the dialog and they must put the sentences in the correct order.

The second activity is called Scoot. I only have 14 students per class so I only made 14 questions but you should have a minimum of one question per student. I print the questions out, fold the paper in half and number them. I tape the questions all around the room. Then I have each student stand in front of the question. When I say 'Go', they can lift the paper to see the question inside and must answer it in the allotted time frame (I give them 30 seconds). When time is up, I say 'Scoot' and they all move to their right. Keep going until all students have answered every question. You can add questions to make the game longer.

(p.s. you need to keep the mp4 file in the same folder as the ppt in order for it to work)

Connect four that elicits key expressions from lesson 4.  got from epiik orientation. can easily be modified to include any lesson . I've printed actual game boards out as well, but find that its better to just play as a class. i've done it different ways, find a way that works for you. i made four teams and had a bracket tournament i.e. team 1 vs team 2. winner of that plays winner of team 3 vs team 4.  they all have to say the key expression, and then i drop their color on the game board. can be really fun.

Chapter Four - Family / families (explain family trees.)

(Talk about your ancestry too if you want.  Get the kids to make their own family tree.)

Speaking rock paper scissors competition game.
I will have to change the game design a little because speaking fast to win doesn't exactly promote the best pronunciation nor a good practice for conversational English, but my students love it nonetheless.
Game instructions. print number of game boards for half of your students. e.g. 30 students = 15 boards. Two students per board. Students start at opposite ends of the board. When I say go, i set a timer for a minute and they speak through the game spaces until they meet somewhere in the middle. At that time, they play rock paper scissors. The winner starts where the battle happened and the loser goes back to the starting point. Once a player reaches the other players 'start' they win. If rock paper scissors goes back and forth, the person closest to the other players start, wins. Pair up the winning matches until you come down a final match between students. I made them perform at the front and everyone was really into it.

This is for Part A "Is it okay if I...?" and "You are not allowed to..."
Activity #2 on my worksheet worked well for my students.
Students can work in partners or alone.
Each student chooses a place (Museum, restaurant, campsite etc) and makes 3 rules for that place using "You are not allowed to..." Rules are to be kept secret!
Put students in groups of four. One student states their chosen place and the other 3 students take turns asking "Is it okay if I..." If the student responds "Yes", you do not get points. If the student responds "No, you are not allowed to do that." you get one point!
Each student takes turn stating their place and have the other students guess their rules!

Fun with Speaking and Vocabulary Review using the Mystery Seed Template found on Waygook  (thanks to the creator) Rules on how to play are explained in the PPT.

Practices the dialog:
Is it okay if _____?
No, you're not allowed to do that.
Calm down. _______
I can't stand it.

Thank you woodsworth English.

The PC Bang is NOT funny, kids.

I had them make their own Family Trees to go with the theme of this lesson. You'll want to replace my picture with your own in the PPT.
