Period 3 writing activity

Telepathy writing game for 3rd period.

Students will choose one of four sentences on the screen to write in their notebook.
When all the students have finished, you eliminate 3 of the sentences so only one is left on the screen. Students who chose this sentence either gain points or lose points. Quite fun!

GROUP BINGO:

I made this for a speaking activity for Grade 4, lesson 6. Thanks to the Go Fish earlier, I used it as a template.

The idea is each group gets one die (dice).

Each person has their own sheet and marks each box with "shirt" or "pen", etc. There are 16 boxes and they can put them once, twice, or even 5 times. But they have to put all the objects.

One person rolls the dice and whatever number they get, they say "Is this your _____?" for example roll #1 would be "Is this your cap?"

Each person marks of the cap and says "Yes, it's mine." But if they don't have a cap, then they say "No, it's not mine."

Then the next person rolls. We do this as 2 line bingo. That is, you need to get 2 lines (horizontal, vertical or diagonal) to win the game.

Board game in the style of trivial pursuit that I designed for this lesson. It was a hit with my classes.

Play in pairs. Have the students do rock-scissors-paper. Take turns with the winner going first. Roll the dice and you can choose the direction you want to move. When A student lands on a given square, B student should ask "Is this your pencil?" and A should answer "Yes it is/No it isn't." Then, A can colour in a square on his pie charts, in this case a pencil. They don't have to fill the pies in in any specific order, e.g. if one pie is not full yet and they land on another pencil, they can fill in the next pencil. The goal is to fill up as many pies as possible.

I have a rewards system where I give "English lotto" tickets to my students. For filling in pies, I would reward them based on how many they completed (e.g. 1 pie - 1 ticket, 2 pies 2 tickets, 3 pies 4 tickets), so you may want to add that to the game for some incentive beyond just winning.

Otherwise, to score the winners, first count the number of completed pies, and then the number of other pieces filled in to determine the winners.

Oh, and a practice ppt. Both of these best used for period 2.

My coteacher and I have been making videos to explain and demonstrate activities for students to watch before class on YouTube. Students LOVE watching the videos. When they come to class, they already know what to do and then choose their activities. The teachers are free to roam around and help individual students. This style of classroom is called "Flipped learning", allowing students to hit pause and rewatch as many times as necessary based on their understanding. They cannot do this in the regular classroom. It takes more time to prepare materials and record the videos, but the classroom runs better as students are more autonomous and interacting with each other rather than listening to the teacher lead the class. It does get tiresome to explain and demonstrate the game several times a day for each class. Why waste that valuable energy when you could be helping individual students?

Here is what I prepared for Period 3.

Matching game pictures: 1st two slides. You can cut and laminate or just cut and glue them onto existing laminated cards. I used blue cards for pictures and yellow for sentences. They need to flip one at a time and find a match.

3rd slide: Flick game.

4th slide: For dice game. We have dice that you can adapt by putting in your own words and pictures, so I made two dice for each game - one with six color words and one with six object words.

2nd PPT: Worksheet to accompany dice game. Roll the dice. If the two words make a sentence and the picture matches, write the sentence. The first student to write all sentences wins. The first slide is for low level (just trace the words). Second slide is for high level.

We're going to record the video tomorrow, so stay tuned. Here are some of our other instructional videos:  http://www.TinyUrl.com/Seorim Nothing fancy. My coteacher edits them using Kine Master. I am patient enough to make all the materials, but not patient enough to edit videos! We're a good team :)

Simple Bingo game with three rounds. I usually let them draw a picture or write the word, whatever they're more comfortable with. Credit to whoever posted the original template~

Here's a Battleship/grid game I used for lesson 6.2. There's an attached ppt. to explain the rules. I have two boards, one with pictures and one with words, so I can vary depending on level.

Here's a telepathy game that I modified from this thread as some of it was not quite like the book! It works really well in class. Be certain to explain that there are positive and minus points. (They already know the word "minus")

Made this for another book.

1. Bad teacher

Students make a sentence, clip on the item to reveal the points.

If they land on the 'bad teacher' all their points go to the teacher.
If they land on the robber "swap" they can swap with the teacher.

I made a pack with my class that If the teacher won the students had to give their best performance in the chant to date.

2. Boardgame

3. Flash game + find the button
-Students look at the flashing pictures and make a sentence to guess what it is.
-Students read the sentence to remove the block. If they find the button behind they can watch a cool gif.

4. Wordshark:
They get three chances before they die.

Greetings!

Here is a Listening Bingo Game that I put together for Part 1 of this Lesson. Print slides 4-8, all different variations of the game board. Mix and print double-sided for a Round 2. Teacher asks the question..."Is this your_______? Students circle the matching picture. First student with six items circled is the winner.

Have Fun!
