Lessons on articles - "a" and "the"
« on: April 04, 2014, 03:19:15 PM »
I've noticed that a lot of my students have trouble with "a" vs. "the." Has anyone successfully explained the difference between these two articles to 4th, 5th and 6th graders?

Cheers!

My wife has created a picture with several animals. You can easily just do dogs and cats...but you must have color.

Then you explain point at a dog.  (Any dog is good.)  Point at the blue dog.  Point at a fat cat.  Point at the white fat cat.

This is probably too difficult for elementary unless you will gloss over it, they most likely won't get the concept.
I had to teach it to 2nd year High School, and many had issues...even with me explaining in Korean sometimes.

Definite Article - 정관사    The
Indefinite Article - 부정관사    A / An

The reasons for the difference in use varies....but basically it depends

1. Countable or Non countable nouns
The air, the oil, the sand , the weather
A ball, a pen, a car  etc

2. If the noun is 'specific' it becomes the,
I watched a film - what film ? any
I watched the film you recommended ?  a specific film
A slice of pizza,  the smallest slice

3. In a story, when you are first introduced to characters or places, it's A/AN,  afterwards it's The.

A man lived in a town.  (a man, we don't know him, 1st time)
The man had a dog  (The man, already introduced, 2nd time)
The dog was black

You can see how and why this is difficult to teach properly.

You then also have the difference between   A / AN ....which at it's most basic for is to do with vowels and their sounds. But there are exceptions such as  an X-Ray (because X in this case takes a   E  sound)

Personally I'd forget teaching Articles to elementary students

Thanks for your response! I've come to realize how difficult it is, and I've since abandoned hope to get them to use the concept proficiently. I didn't seek to explain the concept to them as much as help them practice enough to the point where they feel the difference. I  introduced it to my after school class with the goal that it would be easier for them to learn articles properly later down the line.

I usually make a point of teaching articles with the noun (or noun phrase) when it matters, at least at lower levels. I mean, elementary students aren't really going to be changing any target vocab from using indefinite to definite articles. As for preparing them, at intermediate levels, the biggest problem I've seen isn't so much students muddling up their articles, but not recognising that possessive adjectives* (my, your, his, her), articles (a, an, the) and numbers/counters are mutually exclusive.

* They're actually called this, but I argue that its somewhat of a misnomer as they behave closer to articles than adjectives.
