I've never seen these textbooks, but I have heard a few of my co-teachers discussing them. Opinion seems divided. What is the consensus here?

Thanks so much! I am a new teacher teaching 12-15 years old kids and need to prepare new lesson plans, this really gave me some interesting ideas for my classes!

Thanks a million.

My grade 1 book has entirely different chapters.

1. A New Start
2. Let's Have Fun With Paper
3. Life in the "Computer Age"
4. My Best Friend
5. The Club Festival
6. Summer Vacation
7. Fast Food? Slow Food!
8. Enjoy Your Time!
9. Family Reunion
10. The Wonderful Bike Tutor
11. Money In and Money Out
12. An Angry Girl and a Fence

My grade 3 book is exactly the same as listed in the OP (I don't have 2nd grade so I'm not sure). So whats up with my first grade text? It was bought this year.

This thread has made my frustrating day of planning all the merrier. I really like seeing how you veteran teacher's have made this textbook very accessible and interesting! :)

Hey I have a lot to contribute from Grade 1 but I really need someone to clarify my issue that I posted above. Why are my Grade 1 textbook chapters entirely different from the ones listed in the thread index? My grade 2 and 3 match up perfectly to the thread index. My grade 1 book was bought new this year, so did they buy an old edition or is the thread index based on an old edition?

I'm not trying to be a whiner, I have a lot of grade 1 material to contribute but as it stands now there is nowhere for it to go.

Thanks in advance.

@susielee - Are you a NET or a Korean teacher?

If you ask a specific question we will be more able to help you.......

If you are a NET:
The lessons hosted on waygook from this textbook are far from complete. Part of your job is planning your OWN lessons. WG is great, but other people are not going to do your job for you. :)

Hi all,

I am currently teaching at a middle school and I am really struggling to come up with lesson ideas. I have been teaching for 3 weeks (i am currently in my forth) and I have gone through 3 lessons plans with my grade 3 to varying success. Now I had originally planned to stick as close to the text book as I can but have found that to make the lessons incredibly boring however having asked my co-teacher about the text book she replied not to worry about sticking to close to the book and just try to get the kids to speak certain phrases. Now this is my problem I can't seem to find a happy medium between the text book and being given a vast range of things to plan lessons on and no idea what to get my kids talking about.

So if any of you are using these texts book I was wondering what sort of subject you were talking about and for how many weeks you stay on a chapter (I have my 3rd grade classes once every week so I need a new lesson every week).

I will elaborate to give you an idea of what I have covered so far, Lesson 1 on agree/disagree (plus a little introduction about myself), Lesson 2 on Opinions and reasons (I showed a Mr bean clip and got them to talk to their friends asking for their opinion on the movie and asking why), lesson 3 I expanded on this idea getting them to discuss homework, fast food and music at a very basic level. I'm not really sure where to go from here, im desperately thinking on how to drill the idea of opinions/reasons and how to ask for them but I think will bore them to tears. I am tempted to review the whole chapter and make it as fun as possible and move on, which is why I want to know how long it takes for people to go through a chapter normally.

Sorry for the rambling post, just really stuck, any help would be much appreciated!

Hey for grade 3 I take two weeks per chapter. Right now I'm finishing the secone week of Chapter 7 "Teen Talk". Last week I did "Same Here" and this week I'm doing "What Do You Think?" I only use the activity textbook, the main book is for the korean teachers.

For the first semester I was here I tried to be super creative and fun and deviate from the textbook all the time. But I've come to realize that my students WANT to learn from the textbook. If its not in the textbook in front of them they dont think its important so they dont pay attention. As soon as I start talking about something that is not on the page in front of them they take it as a sign to "check out" and start screwing around.

Each chapter has a vocab list at the front. I usually split it into two - I let students try and explain the word in english then I give them a straight english-korean translation with a nice picture (get your coteacher to help translate). Introduce half the first week and the other half the second week. Then I go over the "Function In Focus" part at the top of the page, doing some listen and repeat dialogues based on the examples given on the page. Then I use the CD and have them do the "Listen" activities from Yellow Line, Green Line, and Blue Line.

I think the key to keep it interesting is to make sure you have good pictures for your vocab/examples and also to have a cool video or something like that to show in the last 2-3 minutes.
Sorry my advice doesn't really apply to your situation, but thats what I do.

Brilliant! I've used a couple of the ppts an tweaked them to suit my classes. So far the kids have loved them, especially the games. Certainly makes things easier, even if it's just to check that I'm on the right track. Thank you :)

I don't know about anyone else but I've found having a little something outside the book as a wrap up helps to get them to think outside the book. The trouble is coming up with something each week.

Thanks for all the helpful ideas given here.
