Rock climbing
« on: June 27, 2014, 02:59:54 pm »
Does anyone else rock climb here? I brought my gear from home, but haven't been able to use them. I thought at least I'd be able to find a group to go outdoors with, but Korea On The Rocks seems pretty dead...

Ya there is a pretty decent group of climbers here. The crags are usually pretty busy though. Gear is also really expensive so I would suggest bringing as much as you can.

Chungnam. In between farms and ...other farms.

Got any specifics, group or crag-wise?

There are a lot of climbing groups on Facebook.  Korea on the Rocks is unfortunately dead for whatever reason.  Anyway, idk any off my head, but just search seoul rock climbers (even though you aren't in seoul), korea climbing calendar i think is another one

Climbing is alive and strong among expats here. Check Korea climbing calendar facebook group which took the online presence in place of KOTR. Also each major city has a facebook group that can easily be found in the facebook search feature. Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Ulsan, and even Pohang have pages. People are out every weekend, myself included, climbing throughout the peninsula. We're about to hit monsoon season though and it will be too rainy and/or hot to climb for about a month-month and a half. Possible but uncomfortable

I am moving to Gangwon-Do (not sure where exactly yet, ehhh EPIK) in a Month and would love to bring my shoes/chalk bag.

Are there any laws/things I should worry about just taking to the mountains and doing a little free form bouldering?
I have no idea what I'm doing.

I don't know, but I would love to find out, too. I don't have a rope yet, so my choices are limited for now.

It varies by area, for example: who the land manager is, is it near a temple, etc. There is a very active group of boulderers in the Busan and Geoje areas that go out weekly to develop and climb. I know of a couple in Gangwon that also boulder regularly. Best thing to do is get on the various climbing Facebook groups and send a message out. The ex-pat climbing community is very warm and inviting in Korea and there are many who have ropes so not having one shouldn't be a problem unless you go with another novice.

Even though it hasnt been updated in a few years, Koreaontherocks.com is still the best place to find climbing areas throughout korea. The threads are inactive but tons of good info on that site.

If you're looking to meet up with others or get advice, check out Korea climbing calendar on FB, or the more local groups Tyler mentioned.

And if you'd like to become involved and join events, check out KOTRI.org.

I'm in Gangwon-do too, there are a handful of great climbing areas around. You should def consider adding a car to your climbing rack.

Sort of. Its for an organization called Korea on the Rocks Initiatives. www.kotri.org and will be more up to date and amendable than KOTR

There is a good climbing facebook group based on people in Daegu, you can add yourself if you want. Most people end up meeting each other at the crags anyways.
