Traditional British/Irish games
« on: July 14, 2014, 01:55:09 pm »
I'm looking for some good classic/traditional British and Irish games for my summer camp, ideally involving movement and at least some speaking. If you know of any good ones, please let me know, thanks!

I don't know if these are specifically Irish or British, but some playground games I remember are:
Mother May I
Red Rover
Tip the Can
What Time is it Mr. Wolf
Stuck in the Mud

Some of these games are non-verbal, but could easily be adapted to include any focus vocabulary (e.g. playing stuck in the mud, the person stuck can only become free once someone touches them and uses the target language). Hope these might help!

Not a game exactly, but for my camp last winter I taught my students a traditional Irish set dance. You can use any Irish reel for music. The students really enjoyed it.

Something like this would be very easy to do

Wow this is interesting. If anyone else has more, I'd be interested. I, too, am doing a camp about the UK, and choosing one of the four major countries for each day. My CT wants it to be more "fun" so the more "fun" it is the better. ;D

I worked in a 'UK room' for a English Festival in Daegu and we had games from a gala, like hoopla, a make-shift coconut shy, pin the tail on the Donkey.

If you have space, you can play tigs (tag?), scarecrow tigs (tag), off-the-ground tigs (tag).

Also, there's British Bulldog, What time is it Mr Wolf, hide and seek. I did 'UK' as a theme for one day last year, but I'm middle school so mine was informative and had no running around  :(
Have a nice Daegu!!

This sounds like fun. I think you've got most of the essentials covered.
(Unless you're feeling ambitious and want to teach them Shinty or hurling?!)

If you want to teach an Irish dance, the 'walls of Limerick' shown above is probably the best. It's simple and children always seem to enjoy the swinging part where you switch partners.

How about variations of skittles? There's several different kinds all over Ireland and the UK both outdoor and pub game versions.
They still hold summer tournaments in my home region.

Thanks everyone. I'll be using some of these games in between the informative/craft making parts of my camp. Another activity I'll have them do is the party game with mystery cards on people's foreheads (with countries' flags instead), they'll have to ask each other yes/no questions to find out which country they have.
