Frasier (TV show) lesson - activities and quiz
« on: September 15, 2014, 12:49:14 pm »
This is a lesson about the US comedy Frasier.

I consider Frasier to be an important part of American popular culture, even though I'm British.

It begins with a gap fill exercise. Play the theme tune off YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQx-H2av1PM) and ask them to fill in the gaps on their sheet. My students had problems understanding Kelsey Grammar's accent, so I had to play it 5 or 6 times in a row. However, they enjoyed the song.

After this, ask them to fill in the question sheet. The questions are quite philosophical and I was surprised by some of the answers.

Finally there is a Frasier quiz. I find that most students already have decent knowledge of the show (it used to be shown on Korean TV); if not, they can try to guess the answers.

You can stretch the Frasier theme to two weeks by asking students to write their own Frasier sketches and perform them in front of the class. That's what I did and I was surprised by the quality of some of the sketches. Inevitably the girls were more sensible than the boys.

One sketch involved Fraiser and Niles going to an exclusive French restaurant. Frasier wanted to order Canard (duck), but pronounced it connard (which basically means 'annoying asshole' or 'Jiralhanae' in French). The waiter threw them out! They ended up having to eat at McDonald's as it was the only place open. It was very funny and Jin-woo was a wonderful Niles.

Some boys did a sketch where Frasier came home drunk on Hennessy and did a poo on the landing. Martin woke up the next morning and thought it was Eddie's doing, so he executed him with his old Police rifle. When Frasier found out what had happened, he felt guilty and threw himself off the balcony. At least I think that was the plot.

Good luck...

The idea here is good.  Exposing the kids to Frasier and the like is a good thing.  But one of your slides in the quiz asks "What does Frasier like to hang out and talk shit?"
1. grammar.
2.  do you seriously use that language in class?  It may be a colloquial term commonly used but it shouldn't be taught in class.

Indeed.  I also welcome the idea, but am highly critical of the execution.  The powerpoint is terrible.  No colour, basic fonts, pictures squashed up and a lot of grammatical errors.

Oh...and no...we shouldn't be teaching our students 'shit' and shit.

Possibly the best lesson plan I have seen on Waygook. My students loved reenacting the scene where Frasier and Niles compete to become the corkmaster of the wine club. Some comedy just naturally transcends linguistic and cultural differences!
