English Institutions Class (Doctor, Hospital, Shopping Mall, Movie Theater, etc)
«
on:
November 27, 2014, 02:04:00 pm »
Hello,
I recently did a six class series for an after school English club that I'd like to share. This was for 5th graders that each student elected to do, so they were all fairly high level (with a few lower level students). I had 28 students and no CT at all so almost all of these materials have Korean explanations.
My topics were:
Ordering at a restaurant
Getting a boarding pass at the airport (and using other public transit)
Buying tickets at a movie theater
Going to a shopping mall
Going to the hospital/doctor's office
Sending a package at the post office.
My general lesson plan for each lesson was this:
Discuss new vocabulary words about the topic with a PPT
Create a project that pertains to the topic
Use the project to complete a short roleplay
Play a game about the topic
I'll upload each class as separate post on this thread.

Class #1 - Ordering at a Restaurant
Introduce new restaurant vocabulary using Intro Vocab PPT. Discuss as a class.
Make a menu using the Make A Menu PPT template. Ss fill out food items and their prices.
Divide students into pairs and give them a copy of the Role Play Dialogue. Students prepare a role play presentation using the menus they've made.
Play the Food Loop Game
Food Loop Game
Teacher prints out the pages of the Food Loop Game PPT. PRINT OUT 6 TO A PAGE TO MAKE SMALL CARDS.
Give Each student a card, and choose one student to go first (or the teacher goes first for the first round)
The student reads the card, "Here's your banana. Enjoy your meal. I would like the apple."
The student with the apple card stands and then reads his card "Here's your apple. Enjoy your meal. I would like the bread." Next the student with the bread card stands and reads.
Continue on until every student has had a chance to read his or her card.
Time the class on how long it takes for every student to read.
Class plays against itself trying to make their time faster and faster with each round.
Note:
For this game, you need to know exactly how many students you have. (You must have either the same number of cards or more than the number of students. If you have less it gets awkward.)
If it turns out you have too many cards just take out however many extra cards you have (IN ORDER) and read them yourself, just reading the first and last sentence of those series of cards, so you can play seamlessly with the students.

Class #2 - Getting a Boarding Pass at the Airport. (Public Transit)
This class is about public transit in general, with a focus on the airport.
Review vocabulary learned in the last lesson
Introduce new public transit vocabulary using Intro Vocab PPT. Discuss as a class.
Create a boarding pass using the Boarding Pass PPT. Instructions included in the Intro Vocab PPT (in Korean).
Divide students into pairs and give them a copy of the Role Play Dialogue. Students prepare a role play presentation using the boarding pass they've made.
Play Word Lotto
Word Lotto (Telepathy Writing Game)
Students look at the 9 words and choose 3 words to write in their English notebooks (or wherever)
T clicks the PPT and only three words will remain.
If a student guessed one word correct, they earn 1 point. Two words, 2 points. Three words, 3 points.

Class #3 - Buying Tickets at the Movie Theater
Review vocabulary learned in the last lesson
Introduce new movie theater vocabulary using Intro Vocab PPT. Discuss as a class.
Create a movie times listing using the Movie Times Template PPT. Instructions included in the Intro Vocab PPT.
Divide students into pairs and give them a copy of the Role Play Dialogue. Students prepare a role play presentation using the movie listing they've made.
Play Blockbuster as a class
Blockbuster Game
This game is a popular Waygook PPT game, so I wont go into detail. You can find the instructions on the PPT template page.
Divide Ss into two teams. Each team tries to make a line across the board by answering questions.
Note:
Have Ss play rock, paper, scissors to decide which team will answer the next question. Otherwise, you end up with a stalemate every time.
I only played one round so on this PPT there's a second page with a bunch of random stuff. Feel free to change if you want to do two rounds.

Class #4 - Going to a Shopping Mall
This class requires some outside prep work.
Review vocabulary learned in the last lesson.
Introduce new shopping vocabulary using Intro Vocab PPT. Discuss as a class.
Divide students into pairs and give them a copy of the Role Play Dialogue. Students prepare a role play presentation.
Play the Market Game
Market Game (This was SO much fun, but HOLY GOD so much work for me)
Print out the shopping lists and item cards and cut them up
Print out money (or if you have play money, use that. Much less time consuming.)
Divide students into 6 teams. Five of these teams will be the customers and the sixth "team" is actually a bunch of individual vendors.
Give the 5 teams $20, and give the each of the vendors (INDIVIDUALLY) $20. I gave each group five $1s, one $5, and one $10. The same for each vendor.
Assign the vendors to different corners of the room.
Give each team of customers one shopping list, give each of the vendors a stack of item cards (I tried to disperse the items on the shopping lists between the vendors evenly, so the customers wouldn't find all their items at one vendor.)
Teacher says, "Go!" and the groups of customers go to the different vendors to buy the items on the shopping list Teacher gave them.
They MUST use the dialogue they practiced earlier.
First team that finishes their shopping list is the winner.
Winning team becomes the vendors in the next round.
Reset the game and play again.
Note:
If you do not have play money you can download realistic pictures of money here:
http://www.had2know.com/education/free-printable-us-play-money.html
There is a restriction on printing life-like money so you will not be able to print the back side in color. Either black and white or just the front.
When choosing the vendors, do not make the mistake I made and ask for volunteers. Just divide them into groups based on where they sit in the classroom and assign one group to go first. Otherwise they will get confused about who's in which group later on.
If you can, try to have some extra $1s available, and be the "bank" in case breaking the bills gets strange and they need to make change.
The prep for this activity drove me crazy, but it was so much fun and the kids absolutely loved it. (Hopefully it'll be a little easier if you do it since the cards and lists are already made)

Class #5 - Getting a Check Up at the Doctor's Office/Hospital
Review vocabulary learned in the last lesson.
Introduce new hospital vocabulary using Intro Vocab PPT. Discuss as a class.
Pretend to be a doctor and create a "medical report" using the Medical Report PPT. Instructions included in the Intro Vocab PPT (in Korean).
Divide students into pairs and give them a copy of the Role Play Dialogue. Students prepare a role play presentation using the medical report they've made.
Play Medical Four Corners Telepathy
Four Corners Telepathy
First discuss each picture on the PPT page using "What's wrong?" and "I have a (...)."
Students go to the corner they think will win.
Teacher removes each slide one by one, last students standing earn a point they should remember on their own.

Class #6 - Sending a Postcard at the Post Office
Review vocabulary learned in the last lesson
Introduce new post office vocabulary using Intro Vocab PPT. Discuss as a class.
Create a postcard using the Postcard Template PPT. Instructions included in the Intro Vocab PPT (in Korean).
Divide students into pairs and give them a copy of the Role Play Dialogue. Students prepare a role play presentation using the postcard they've made.
Watch a video.
Note:
If you can, print out the postcard template on card stock to give it a realistic feel! The kids loved writing little letters to their friends in other classes!
This was my last time with the kids, so I took it easy and showed them an Adventure Time episode with Korean subtitles. You can find every episode with Korean subtitles here:
http://blog.naver.com/ryu_wol__
Before I showed the video, I wanted to "send" each one of my kids a "letter" so I bought a bunch of colorful envelopes, put a few pieces of candy in each and wrote their names on the front as if it were a real letter being sent. Just a thought~!

The restaurant class ended up taking me four or so lessons, so I made a bomb game with the vocabulary (minus Kitchen) as a review.
The froot loop game is great. The kids think they will hate the game, but as soon as they start playing it they love it. I only have about 15 kids, so I just doubled up the cards on my higher levels.
These are amazing, by the way, they are the basis for my whole after school class this year. I'll post any additional materials I make for these.
