One Piece Adventure Game (Survival Scenario + Role Play)
« on: December 23, 2014, 03:18:22 PM »
New Update:
OK! I gotten a lot of feedback on this game and I have revised it slightly.
I've added more speaking parts for Part B including:

-More speaking activities
- Point system has been lowered in Part B.
- Bombs make an appearance so one team doesn't steamroll another.

This is a hybrid of a survival game + choose your own adventure story game.

I wanted to make a game that makes every team play at the same time. This is a game that will be great for high energy classes.

It is broken down into 2 parts. You can play the entire thing through to the end or split it up between Part A and B.

This entire game cannot be done easily in 45 minutes. I'd recommend using it in camps or taking two days to play it.

Part A: Typical survival scenario.
Luffy is missing and you must assemble the best team to go get him.
Choose up to 4 members. Some will work better with others too.
Use the worksheet and have each team fill it in.

Part B: It's a role play game where you follow the story, using the same team you choose in part A. Follow the prompts and play through.
Keep track of all teams items, characters, options, and points by writing it on the board.

Note: Part B has been updated! With more speaking games and activities.

New updated link with bombs (much more effective in my opinion):

**Worksheet is posted below in PDF format incase you can't open the .pub file included in the zip file. It's the last post.

I was going to test this game out in an after school class I am subbing for.

I was going to start today but I still can't find a way to open the worksheet. It's in a file format that I don't have on any of the school computers. Microsoft Publisher... or a PUB file. (thought it was a joke at first)

Could you please post the file in a different format? It would be really handy and awesome if you could.

Otherwise I'm sure I can just have them do on a scrap paper. But formatted ones are so much prettier. And prettier = better.

Does your computer not have microsoft publisher? (most schools come with the entire office package)
If not, I'd recommend it! It's great for making worksheets and game templates. Much better than word.

Anyway, there is a PDF file posted under all the attached photos. you can download it there.

I think we have a reskinned bootleg copy. Some internet programs won't accept the .docx files saved from" Microsoft Word" on my computer because it says it isn't Microsoft Word. Err... that is to say we also don't have Publisher. Thanks for the pdf though! Your work is great as always! I just found out I have a different group of students than I thought I did and have to put together a new 11 day camp starting next week, so this will save me a good day.

I went through the whole thing and everything seems to be working fine. It's absolutely fantastic! It looks so good and is so much fun that it's almost ridiculous. Worth a Nobel Prize as far as I'm concerned. A million thanks!

Oh man... I didn't even see that PDF file. Thanks for pointing it out. However, I just took it home and used Publisher on my home PC. I've worked in 2 different public schools now and it isn't on a single computer. I don't think it's standard to have. You must have an awesome IT guy where you work.

And you've inspired me to look into publisher more. I've had the program but have never opened it once.

Anyways, I did the lesson with my classes. It was fun. They enjoyed it. It also got me thinking. It would be great if there was a way to randomize outcomes or maybe the points so that you could play the game over. At least part A.

Part A can be done successfully in 30 minutes. Depending on student level you can stretch it to 40. I had 8 students so perhaps with a larger class it will take much longer. I had boys vs. girls 4 on each team. They were higher level elementary students. Overall I say it is a fantastic and fun game to keep students motivated.

My only criticism is this: Not enough chances for speaking and a difficulty gap between part A and B.

In part A there was reading and writing (if you have them copy the worksheet word for word) and it got them thinking, which was great. There was also a chance for a little bit of speaking when explaining why, but that was also the greatest challenge for most students. They simply repeated back the strengths they wrote down. In a 40 minute class I would consider this a reading or writing lesson with some speaking.

Part B is the lesson I wish had more opportunity. The choices were great such as choosing supplies and jewels. As well, the in game choices prompted speaking opportunities and places to use their English such as left or right and directions. However, there wasn't many chances for full sentences... but this isn't to say it was bad... I'm just making suggestions to your wonderful game. Games like this are great fun, but often simpler games are more productive for giving students the chance to speak. I would never be able to use this lesson in a regular class setting unless it was a kill time day.

A suggestion such as, adding magic phrases to say that opens a door. Or deciphering a code that gets points or making the students have some kind of dialogue. Anything to get them speaking more. I am horrible at editing on PowerPoint, and my ideas never really come to life like yours did here. So all the props to you man. I'm just adding my 2 cents.

Bottom line is I loved it. Though it was awesome. Just trying to throw ideas out there.

Thanks for the ideas. I liked some suggestions you added, such as more puzzles, deciphering codes, or speaking out sentences. Maybe in the future I will add those. I made a mario one that had those ideas in there, but I found it was a huge time filler. Not a bad thing, but I felt the game was too long and they lost interest.

How long did it take your students to go through part B?

Hello, thanks for the game. I ran this over about 1 and a half periods or so...probably a little bit shorter than that. I did this with a class of 6 grade 1 middle school boys and they were fairly into it. They even began writing down the strengths and weaknesses without me prompting them to. One group was very deliberate with their choices and the other group fought over everything. The team that put most careful thought and deliberated in the group about choices along the way got totally steamrolled by the other group which was unfortunate.

Overall the game was a success but as another has pointed out, it would be nice for a chance to students to speak, though in some sections the students were reading out the dialogues because they were interested.

I'm not sure if my experience will help improve the game, but thought I'd share what happened. Thanks again.

Yes your advice helps a lot, as it gives me a time frame to work with. I won't be using this game till Wednesday so it's great to have as much input as I can before playing it.

I'm incorporating speaking games into the Part B....some dont have much to do with the plot of the story but gets the students speaking more. I hope to have it finished by tomorrow. I'll re-post with the additions.

thanks for all the input, guys.

Hey there. I would have replied sooner but I was ill for quite some time.

For part B, it took a bit longer than part A. With my 8 students it ran around 40 minutes. But we weren't going fast. I made a mistake in the game I think. I only let the students pick one guy from their team to get points. But later I realized I should have given points for each character. This game should increase in fun with more teams. I would love to play this with my regular class and co-teacher but some of those students have played already.

It would be cool to team up with some people who knew how to randomize stuff like that so I could play this again with the same students. As well, if you need any puzzle ideas I wouldn't mind helping throw out some ideas.

Maybe my post is too late to matter to help you with time, but if you used it how long did it take you? Since you made it I'm curious how long it took you.

This helps alot!
Ive played it once with the grade 2's and it went well. Not as good as I expected though. One team just got destroyed in Part B. I think they lost interest halfway through....

Part A I think was a little more successful than B because the students really liked the twist of what happens to the characters (like chopper and Ace).
Overall it took us about an hour to play through for both A and B.

I also think more teams would be better. Two is not enough. I found the biggest issue in Part B is that if one team is really far ahead the other team just gives up because there isn't much change to catch up.

I was considering putting in BOMBS throughout the game in order to keep any team from reaching a ridiculously high score.

 What do you think?

I think bombs could be effective, or lots of minus points and refuse to let a team drop below zero. I used this today over the course of two periods, giving 40 minutes for the first section and 50 for the second, and making the kids speak and explain everything along the way. They're an advanced class, so proceeding in this manner was very useful. The kids really got into it, especially the tongue twister. I tried to keep it slow in the beginning, and because of that ended up unable to finish the second half.

They really want to finish it on Monday though, it's always a good sign when the kids get so into it the make requests. I was a little skeptical that it would get tedious after such a long time, but despite point differences they were still very much into it.

Wow! I'm glad they had such a positive reaction. Maybe my kids are just sore losers. (which some of them really are now that I think about it)

I had much more minus points in the first draft of the game, but I thought it was way too much.....maybe ill re-instate them just to see what happens. BOMBS will be added in there somewhere in the future. Ill update and post the original version and a BOMB version. Just for anyone who want to have a more competitive version.

This is really great! I used it as a treat for vacation and it went down really well. Although, it took around 1hr 40 to complete as I asked questions throughout and reasons for their decisions.

One small mistake I (my students) picked up on. When the snake arrived and you chose to light a fire. It said it was raining.... But some kids had the girl who can control the weather and therefore they should not get a minus. I agreed, but didn't know how to edit it correctly, so I just gave a +1 instead.

Other than that, it was great! :)

Hats to her for that observation!
To edit it just click away the box that says, "light a fire" and change the answer underneath.
I would have done the same that you did. But it only applies if the team has Nami. ;)

For some reason, I'm not sure why, I wasn't able to download the file from the filesharing service. Am I supposed to have an account with them, or did it disappear? I clicked both links, for note.
