Yoga class for elementary students: lesson plan, ppt, advice
« on: February 04, 2015, 01:31:23 PM »
This ppt introduces some vinyasa and hatha yoga positions.

Although it includes two sequences (hatha and vinyassa), I recommend only teaching yoga for 20 minutes total. The students loved it for that long, but began to hate it after I pushed them to do a second session.

I recommend avoiding the sun salutation. Although in vinyassa, you're meant to do it between each position, it really wears the kids out and also makes them hate yoga ;0 I think just doing it once or twice is plenty.

I recommend keeping it simple and light- acting out the positions- mooing in cow pose, shooting an arrow in warrior pose. And at the end, give them plenty of shavasana (relaxation). Also, they enjoyed saying namaste.

I also recommend avoiding showing really impressive videos of yogis performing positions. I thought it might motivate my students to think yoga was cool, but i think it just made it feel less meaningful.

If you're not experienced in yoga, you can still get enjoyment out of teaching the positions in this ppt, just copy the pictures.

The students also really enjoyed doing simon says yoga style- using the actions: raise, lower, bend, straighten, join, separate.

this is great.  I think it could be worked into some lessons, like animal lessons for younger students or command structure sentences for 4th grade on up.

I have been wanting to introduce them to yoga.  There is also a video youtube that i showed them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qX9FSZJu448&index=7&list=FL4YxpVDw39f6GNiL0zjOZcA

It shows how he healed himself with yoga.  its a great motivational video.  it might work well with this lesson or anything related to body and health.

I am teaching my students yoga for summer camp 2016. They really liked the video that I presented to them from youtube. The video is for kids. The poses were simple and playful. It lasted 30 minutes. I did have some trouble with hyperactive boys in the back but overall they kept it to a minimum. I am sure after a few more lessons they will calm down and focus.

This is a great class for the summer as it is hot and they don't get out very much. Exercise is very important for children. They are growing up so quickly, and need to be active. The key is to keep them focused.

I actually did a Yoga class for summer camp, so I might as well share the ppt since this topic moved back up. I just reused the lesson at another school today for an after school class and I had teachers coming in to take pictures the whole time. Definitely a hit.

Just follow the ppt and you should be able to fill 40 minutes. There are Korean translations so you could probably use this with a variety of levels. I simplified the history quite a bit for elementary, so feel free to change that. Most schools have yoga mats for PE, so I'd recomened borrowing some for the class.

When I worked at SEEC, in Gapyeong, we had the option of yoga and dance.  I taught dance because I felt the kids would enjoy it more.  I did show some yoga poses that were hard to do.  They had fun with it.  Remember, these are kids... they might not have the attention span required for yoga.
