« on: February 24, 2015, 04:24:27 PM »
Hi guys!

I made a vocabulary PPT  for Lesson 1 nothing special I promise you. I have the Korean translation included in the PPT. If someone could link this in for the new textbooks that would be great.  ;D

I also have a super mario game I just edited it I didn't make it :)

Here's my simple introduction PPT for this lesson.  For the first day of class, after my new co-teacher has introduced herself, we will make nametags, then use this PPT to warm up before finishes with a little bit of the textbook.  Hope you find this useful.

Has anyone else noticed the flashcards in the back of this new YBM textbook?  They look like the kind of thing the students could keep on an ordinary binder ring.  For each lesson there are between 4 and 9 cards with the words/pictures for some key vocabulary.

I actually think the textbook creators got pretty smart with this one!  Granted, as long as the kids can keep up with their cards, I think they could be very useful (I know when I'm studying another language, this kind of simple reference is helpful).

I'm trying to brainstorm some ideas for how the flash cards on a binder ring could be used.  So far, I've thought they might be good for:
self-study,
quiz-style study with a partner,
pop quizzes,
word lotto,
some kind of warm-up activity (i.e. the students are given 1 minute to review their cards, then given a word puzzle to see how many they can find).

Anyone else think these cards might be helpful?
Any other ideas for how to use them?

And a couple of materials for the jobs lesson:

First is just a simple survey for the students to go around and ask eachother about what job they want to have in the future.  Depending on the group of students they either get really interested in what their friends will say or are totally bored by this activity, ha.  Anyway, it's usually quick, about 5-7 minutes for them to find and ask 10 friends.

Second is called "Pyramid Dice Game."  I found and used this last year to much success, so thanks to the original contributor.  Just print the first slide for your game board.  Then, there are a series of slides for practice.  Finally, the last 3 slides do a pretty good job of explaining the rules via animation.
These instructions can be a little confusing at first for the students, as there are a lot of steps, but once they catch on they tend to really enjoy it.  The basic idea is to try and ascend the pyramid and accumulate the most points.  To move up a level, students have to role higher than a certain number (listed on the board below or beside the level).  They can also declare a "Job Battle" if they want to swap jobs with another player.  It helps for students to keep score in their notebooks or on scratch paper.  Also, the specific jobs used in the game could easily be switched if you want to focus on other careers like "cook, artist, baseball player, etc."

Good luck!

I realize these can't be used on a binder, but here are some ideas for the flashcards  anyways:

1. Go fish game: Groups of 4- Have students put all their cards together and mix them. Each student gets 4-6 cards. Students take turns and ask a student of their choice: Do you have a (cook/police officer etc). IF that student has that card, he needs to hand it over. Students need 4 of the same card. If they collect 4 of the same, they can put it down on the desk and get 1 point.
2. Snatch game: Students in groups of 2 put cards on the desk and snatch the right card when you call out a specific job. Student with most cards win.
3. Pass the  bag game: Put one pack of cards in a bag and pass it like pass the ball game. When the music stops, that student needs to take out one card and say: I want to be a ____.

I will think of more and add it here!

Hey all, back for another year of teaching & sharing ppt's. Be sure to check this post every now & again as I'll be editing it if/when I make more ppt's for the later parts of the lesson.

Slap game: Divide the class into two teams, 2 students come up to the front and have their back facing the TV screen with fly swatters. Everyone asks me "What do you want to be?" I answer "I want to be a(n) ____." Both students then turn around & the first person to slap the correct job on the TV using the fly swatter gets a point for their team. (Ideal for the first period)

Pass the Pencil Case game: Instructions included in the PPT. (Ideal for the second period)

What's Behind ??? game: Very similar to the elimination game if you've ever played it. Students take turns reading one of the boxes on the PPT, teacher clicks it to remove it. If a candy is revealed then they get a treat or point or whatever. 14 rounds, 1 winner per round. (Ideal for the fourth period)

Just a quick idea I had for jobs/occupations vocabulary.

Give teams 5 minutes to write down 6 different jobs.

After, have 1 student from each team present and log that teams answers.

The catch; teams will only receive points for having unique answers (you can tell them that before or after depending on how dastardly you are.)

How do you guys keep the class interested when its the same occupations coming up?

My teacher is a recent grad, can't control the class, and works solely from the book. I'm a new EPIK teacher myself and am not sure how to interject games into the class.
For the first part I just drilled the key vocab but the students got bored fast and it was chaos for the last 20mins :(

Theres another 4 parts to this lesson, how to keep it fresh?

Watch a few co-teaching in Korea videos on Youtube for some ideas. I think most teachers use games for the last 5-10 mins of class. As for discipline, I use www.classdojo.com as a point/reward system to help keep students in check. Good luck!

This worksheet from Bogglesworldesl.com is really good for explaining how to add -ing to verbs.

I've used with 4th grade before and I will use with 6th grade for this lesson

Here is another song by British Council - Learn English Kids, with the lyrics on a ppt so that you can go through the words slowly. My student really enjoyed this song and the People song.
