2015 Grade 5 Cheonjae 1 - 1. I'm from England
« on: March 03, 2015, 12:26:40 PM »
Starting off simple and fun (hopefully) for the first class, since it's the start of a new school year and I've got a new coteacher. We're using the look and listen from the book and a song I found.

We're also playing one of the two games I've heard called "Trash Ball". This is the one where you put images or phrases on the board and students throw a wad of paper at the correct answer. So, for this chapter, I've attached the flags associated with the countries in the vocabulary and the names of some of the characters in the beginning of the book. We will practice the questions "Where are you from?" and "How do you spell your name?". Then, the class is broken into two groups, one player from each team will come up and the class will ask one of the two questions. The teacher will answer ex. "I am from Canada" or "E-M-M-A" and the students should throw the trash ball at the Canadian flag/Emma depending on the question and answer. The first student to hit the correct answer gets a point.

Since this book is very similar to the old YBM book, I've updated an old ppt.

The theme in Winter Olympics but for 2018.
I use the key expressions:
I'm from _____. Also added nationality. (i.e. American, Chinese, Korean, etc.)

This is for period 1. There is a heavy emphasis on printing stuff out, interactive games, and not using a book. This is all for period 1.

There are bingo cards for up to 20 students.
Also the Olympic profiles are for the slap game.

Two files for the 2nd period (speaking part) of the lesson. Flags PPT for intro/review. Pyramid game. How to pLAY: All students start at the bottom and ask each other the question. Rock, Paper, Scissors battle. Winner goes up, loser goes down. When they get to the top level they find a teacher and play against them. If they lose they have to go ALL the way back to the bottom level. Winner gets a star on the board.

L1P2- A quick 'net search lead me to this fun video that focuses on the key expressions, "Where are you from?"/ "I'm from...". My students loved it and had a blast.

I used it in place of the Speak and Play. I showed a few seconds of the video (starting from the 10 sec mark) to help explain. They got it right away.

Game Instructions:

All students (Ss) will stand. Ss will chant, "Where are you from" once followed by two claps then randomly shout out a country (from the list you have posted on the board or PPT). If they say the same country as the T, then they must have a seat, but they will continue to sing and monitor other Ss.

I did a few rounds with me as the leader, then I had would select some of the seated Ss in increments ea. round to come & form an alliance with me helping to have all Ss seated by the end.

Update; we're using the Yakko's World song as a motivation instead because my coteacher wants to talk about why we learn English and that many countries learn English too, etc. (She's doing it in Korean, so I don't know the whole speech. haha) So, here it is:

Here's my ppt game for asking and answering "Where are you?" The first two slides introduce the question and different countries, and the rest of the slides are to play the game. You can have the kids get into teams of 3-5. They will be presented with one flag. The group has 10 seconds to decide which country it is from. When the time is up, the first group to raise all their sticks/fly swatters/hands/whatever will have the first chance to answer. The answer must be in the sentence “I’m from...” If the first group gets their answer wrong, the next group to raise their hands/etc first will have the second guess. Points will be tallied for correct answers. You can of course change the game play, but basically its a question and answer game.

Also, I included a power point that introduces countries  and a world map. At the end of the ppt, there is a group presentation activity. Each group of students will be given one country. They must answer questions about that country, and then present their answers to the class.

Here's a game I created for more practice for day one. We did spin the wheel. If you don't have one in your class, you can do what I did at my branch school. If the team guessed correctly, then they got select a card from a can for points, which included cards with change points, steal points, lose half points, or cards with two to five points. Very easy. They loved it. Of course, you can also edit the PowerPoint game and add slides for points. I wanted to change it up a bit.

Here are some of the materials I have used during the first four periods in Chapter 1. None of these games were created by me, but I did add and update the pictures so that they would fit with the vocabulary for this book. Hopefully they can be of use and thank you so much to all the original game makers!!

Here is a Wizard of Oz storytime from EBS that we are using during our review periods. We are not playing the whole video (attached) - only the story part of it. I have my own introduction and questions. I have attached the questions and answer ppt - students will answer write the answers in their notebooks and then we will check together.

Here is a more practical idea - get a map - in fact, get a few maps (so that students don't memorize them) and instead of slap the flag type of game, get them to slap a country.  This way they might actually learn the locations of the said countries.

Card game

This is a PPT that's meant for printing out.
Print out and cut up the sentences.
(the PPT can also be used to check their answers)

Students work in pairs to put the sentences in order. Do one color at a time.

I made this into a game to see who could finish first  :P
