sweating too much while teaching
« on: April 15, 2011, 07:39:51 am »
Okay. The weather is warming up, and I keep having flashbacks of teaching last summer with rather horrific pit stains. And I'm a woman.  ???
Korean people don't seem to sweat as much, which makes it all the more awkward. Anyone know where to buy sweat-guards in Seoul? Ugh.

thearrivalstore.com will deliver to you. There are various places in Seoul - try underground markets would be my advice, it's sometimes amazing what those backstreet/underground stalls have from the English speaking world.

I fear I'll have the same problem this summer too. I already was sweating so much in a few of my afternoon classes because the rooms were so stuffy. ><

i've heard that a solution that some use is to use ... i don't know the technical name... women's pads? under your armpits. i guess that would require wearing something with at least short sleeves, but it may work.

 8) This whole thing is a little awkward. But it's a quasi-serious issue.
I've never had any luck with prescription stuff, my sweat glands are just too strong!  I'll check Watsons - I wonder what the Korean name for sweat guards would be.

I used to have the same problem, sweating profusely even when it was just a little warm outside. Went and saw a specialist back home and everything. He told me to switch to a different deodorant and soap, specifically anything that didn't contain aluminum, haven't had a problem since.

You can get botox under your arms.  Almost any dermatologist office can do it for you.  You will never sweat again (under the arms) for 6 months.  I know it sounds crazy, but it's a pretty standard practice in the U.S.  It will cost you several hundred dollars - but very well worth it..

Have you do it? How painful is it?  :o

I have a sweating issue when I eat spicy food- which is every meal in korea :(  I'm gonna start wearing a headband every time I eat...

Anyway, to the OP, get a little mini-fan and set it on your desk. Point it at your upper-torso region and think about glaciers and polar bears.

I used a prescription strength anti-perspirant called Driclor last year once a week and it worked wonders. Wait until you're really sleepy and in bed then apply it as it can be really itchy to put it on when you're awake. It literally stops all moisture and is really cheap. Don't shave your armpits (ladies) or take a shower though before you use it as the skin will be too sensitive. I bought it from an online pharmacy and got my mum to post it to me here.

i have the same problem.  it's crazy hot in my class in the summer.  so much so that i often have to sit down or i get a bit dizzy.

a few suggestions (based on experience and things i've heard from others)
-limit your caffeine and alcohol intake (they make you sweat more)
-wear dark coloured clothes
-go to watsons and buy the underarm "pads" (they stick to your shirt and soak up the moisture

enjoy spring!  the heat (and rain/mugginess) is just around the corner.  :)

Okay guys, this problem can be solved very easily.  go to your nearest drug store or 약 and ask for  "Driclor"  this product is excellent and I have been using it since I first got to Korea as I used to have a armpit sweat problem, and used to go through like 3 tshirts every day !!  just apply this stuff under your armpits after you shower and before you sleep. Then make sure you shower in the morning and wash it off.
I swear you will never sweat from your armpits ever again.  I use this stuff about once a month and I don't even need to use a deodorant anymore !
this costs about 10,000w for a small roll on bottle.  It will be money well spent..  trust me !!!

Wow, I'm really glad someone brought up this up, as I sweat even more than most westerners I know.  Nothing worse than that bratty 2nd grader pointing out your sweaty arms when you raise your arms to demonstrate something.  To make matters worse, the only solution that has even a small effect for me has been undershirts, which just further increase the temperature!

Big thanks for that Driclor (or however you spell it) suggestion - I'll have to try it out.  I can find that in Korean pharmacies?

Yes, I've had the botox done about 10 times over the last 5 years.  It doesn't hurt at all.

Be careful with Dricol.  I tried that and it didn't work.  It's actually almost completely Formaldehyde, which is a known carcinogen.  Plus, I have sensitive skin, so it actually produced a awful chemical burn.

http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Risk/formaldehyde

That being said, my dermatologist in the U.S. did have me try Dricol first, but as I said - it did not work as I sweat a lot.

Trust me, do the botox.  It will make your life SO much more pleasant.

Like I said, it can be done at most cosmetic dermatologist's offices.

Trust me when I say you WILL NOT SWEAT UNDER YOUR ARMS for 6 months.  You don't even have to wear deoderant after.

-wear dark coloured clothes

i think this is a really bad idea.  light colored clothes reflect heat away from you.

i recommend wearing light colored, light weight, loose fitting 100% cotton clothes.  don't tuck in your shirt, that just traps the heat in your shirt.
if you have chest hair, i recommend you try removing it with a pair of clippers.  it will really cut down on the amount of heat you feel.  also, if you trip your armpit hair, you won't smell as much.
