Airport VIP Lounge - Worth it?
« on: April 06, 2015, 03:10:57 pm »
My fiance has a credit card that allows him free access to the VIP lounge at the airport and he is trying to convince me to sign up for one, as well. You have to spend a min of 1,000,000won ($1,000) on the card and get about four free uses of the lounge. Then, we could cancel it theoretically as soon as we we used up our passes.

My fiance wants me to sign up because we're going on our honeymoon soon and have a few other long flights planned over the year.

My question is: is it worth it? In my view, regardless of how pretty the chairs are, you still have to wait for your plane. Also, I'm wary of getting credit cards under my name. But my fiance thinks that the comfort and free food/drinks are absolutely worth it.

What do you think?
I felt sorry for myself because I had no shoes-- until I met a man with no feet.

Depends on how long the layovers are. Some of the lounges have really, really nice food made to order and a wide range of drinks. Some even have showers and little nap rooms and massage chairs! For a 1-3 hour layover, not worth it. Anything longer, worth it. I had a 9 hour in Singapore. I would have loved loungew access then.

It depends on you, your flight times, what carrier you will be flying, and your destination airport.

The Businees Class lounges for Asiana at Incheon Airport are terrible, and their First Class lounges aren't much better.  Asiana's idea of business class food is ramen noodles.  Unfortunately, the selection of wine and spirits is on the same level as their food.

If you will be needing a shower or a slumberette, due to travel times. etc., I would say, it is a good idea.  However, if you won't be needing either, there isn't much point.

Joining a mileage program and being faithful to the carriers in that program can get you access to their lounge for a modest fee, mileage, or rewards.

Bottom line, you have other options to get access.

Best of luck.

I tried out one of the VIP lounges at Incheon airport when we flew to Singapore. I never went back again (we were flying out from Incheon 2 more times in the following weeks) even though we could go for FREE, which I think says about everything that needs to be said about the quality of the food. There are a couple of pictures at the start of my blog post. http://gdaykorea.blogspot.com.au/2015/02/singapore-gardens-by-the-bay-china-town-marina-bay-sands.html

Something I did find though is that on the upper level where the VIP lounges are there are some FREE massage chairs. They are outside the VIP lounge areas so you don't need a pass to access them.

It really depends on the lounge itself, Asiana lounge in Incheon, especially the one in the detached concourse (I know there is another one in the main concourse) is pretty sad. Very few food choices and the whole atmosphere is quite depressing

You need to really check out the credit card and be sure lounges will accept it where you are going. There are tons of restrictions for each card and many only work regionally. I have been standing behind plenty of people that thought their card would work and the lounge denies them.

Lounges are great though. Showers are always nice to take before the flight and usually they are pretty quiet. Food is typically boring unless you are in the first class lounges.
