Quick Vocab PPT for Period 1. Double check the Korean translations before using.

5.14.1 - Make a Sentence

Print out and cut up the words and punctuation.

In groups of 4, students arrange the words on their table.

Teacher(s) create sentences using the words and students must listen & arrange the words correctly. Extra points for correct punctuation.

I usually use a timer of 30-45 seconds per sentence.

Hello,

Reference: What time do you?

I made 2 games of hotseat. One is the structure 'I ________ at _______' and the other is 'what time do you ___________?' They both have the same slides just moved around, and the sentences from the book are repeated several times. They are interspersed with random ones, some of which will sound a little artificial (e.g. what time do you read the newspaper?), but it's all in the name of variety.  Delete where required. Hope it helps!

Regards,

Ian

Here are all the files I've made myself for Period 1:

Key Expressions File
1. Teach the key expressions with Korean meaning
2. Memorize mini game to help students remember and practice the expression. Ss should try to remember the order of the pictures. It's broken up into two sets of threes.
3. Explain the full key expression
4. Review numbers for time.
5. Practice the two different key expressions
6. In partners, have Ss ask and answer the questions.
7. New vocab for the look and listen.

3 and a Row Board Game
Objective: Students try to get as many "three in a rows" as they can.

Used the fantastic template from Jennifer Yong to make a Pirates game for this unit. Always an easy way to trick the kids into speaking practice. :)

Rather strange use of "Not at all." in this chapter, no?

I know they're just trying to demonstrate the phrase, but I think "That's okay." is much more common.

I adapted the password game for this lesson, but used the same korean words as the passwords.  My students really loved this game!  I allowed only one guess per sentence that I read, and the winner had to try and translate the word into English to get a sticker.

To play, print out the 1 page of the PPT as the handout for the students.  Then the teacher reads the sentence, "Ex: I get up at 7:30" and the students have to write the corresponding Korean character on their handout.  The answers are on the last page of the PPT under the blue box (I didn't want student accidentally seeing the answers).

Happy teaching!

Yeah I checked it out because it's supposed to be after a positive thing like thank you, here it makes no sense. So I have kindly told my students it makes no sense and to ignore it. They should use that's okay instead. Honestly why do they just make stuff up?!

More '100% incorrect' than 'strange'

I agree with dizzl.  Also seems like they're trying to apply a very specific response to a specific apology (ex. "I'm sorry if I came off as rude on the phone." "Not at all.  What do you need?") to general apologies.

Guess we can add this one to the pile of extremely awkward or downright incorrect expressions this publisher has made this year between 5th and 6th grade ("Do you know anything about it?" "I have no idea." ; "I'm faster than you." "That's not right." ; "I rode a boat." ; "I think it's fun.  What do you think?" "I think so / I don't think so.")  Sigh.

If Ujin Jun went to San Francisco State University like it says in the back of the book, they must not have given him any say in what phrases went in.  Most likely someone higher-ranking or older thought it was a good idea and no one could correct them.

I let the other ones I mentioned above slide, but this one I'll have to explain ("If it's on the test, this is the answer.  But it's wrong, so don't say it.  Ever.  Just say 'That's okay.' or 'Don't worry about it.'")

Nice intro powerpoint!!

I added a few slides about night workers to give them ideas of alternate schedules.

EDIT: I attached the wrong one, but now the right one should be there.

My kids love "What time is it Mr. Wolf" so planning on adapting it for this chapter!

Students together: "What time do you get up?" (will change each time based on picture on ppt)
Wolf: "I get up at 7!"

I don't believe it's a wrong phrase, though it's less common in my experience. Search google for the phrase "I'm sorry. Not at all." and you get 150,000 results, including recent and older fiction books. However, it seems to me a bit formal. So I'll just teach kids in that context. Certainly "That's okay," is more common and informal in conversation.

If some CEO or some stranger, etc bumped into me saying "sorry", I might say, "Not at all."

Give each student the handout. Read the sentences so that they make the code. (five sentences per slide). Have the kids write down the corresponding number.

Routines Song!
« Reply #17 on: December 05, 2015, 12:16:35 PM »
This country song didn't get all the students attention with their K-Pop infested cellphones, but some of them like it. I think it helps students understand routines.

COME HOME and GO TO SCHOOL

I think "come home" is weird in this context.

I looked it up and "come" is motion toward the speaker or listener. And I was kind of teaching it that way anyway... like if you're mom calls and says "when are you coming home?".

But the text is talking about as a regular basis, "I come home at 3:00." Weird. It should be "I go home at 3:00."

What do you think? And how are you teaching it?
